This really happened to me.

My home office PC had an automated backup program running that saved my data to a USB connected external hard drive. I figured everything was A-OK and there was nothing to worry about. In truth, I hadn't been careful enoough in selecting software that reported via email/popup/siren/flashinglights when something went wrong.

The external drive failed and I didn't notice. A couple of months later the local electrical utility company was doing some work about 2 miles from me. A truck backed into a pole holding a transformer... knocking out power in the area... and breaking my main hard drive in my PC. The one I thought was safely copying data to the external drive.

Emails, bookmarks, software, data, music files, photos, work, play, family tree data, contracts, etc, etc -- all gone.

Oops!

$1,500 later I had my data recovered to a new boot drive.

I also learned two things:

Be careful about selecting my backup software
Check to make sure it is running

A couple of months later I read about an online backup solution. Secure, automatic, remote, reliable, simple to set up and affordable. In fact, you can back up 2 GB of data at no cost if you want to try it out. When you need your data it is right there on the Internet. You can even restore using just a browser!

All of my valuable emails, pictures, scanned images & documents, genealogy databases and reports were gone... without warning. And it cost me a bundle of $ and some frayed nerves before I got lucky enoough to get them recovered. I don't want to do it again.

For 2010... promise yourself to visit http://nolimitsuccess.info/mozy.html and when you forget about making backups you can sleep peacefully knowing your computer is looking after things for you. It will be a resolution that is easy to keep!

The Secret: It's No Secret But There's a Problem
By Christine Breese

There is a lot of ado about the movie The Secret. However, it has never been a secret! It's already built into your being. The Law of Attraction has always been in effect whether or not it has been named, just as gravity was operational long before it was named.

I am glad to see movies like The Secret in the mainstream. The Secret movie is THE most successful commercial enterprise that has put this message out there. It's about time someone got this out to the masses!

The movie, The Secret: Law of Attraction, provides a chance for people to become aware of how their thoughts and emotions affect their realities. A positive thought creates positive experiences, a negative thought creates negative experiences. If the habit of positive thoughts and emotions become your natural state, your whole life will change. Whatever you focus on and feel, that's what you get. Positive thinking is a healthy habit to get into.

The problem with The Secret, though, is what the movie fails to teach about the Law of Attraction. It is not the only way to create what you want and live a life of happiness and joy. In fact, the techniques in The Secret will not bring you happiness and fulfillment, even if you master the ability to attain what you want.

The Secret does not teach about compassion, the heart, and caring about others. It teaches how to "get more of what you want," which encourages egotistic desire and wish fulfillment. This is a distraction on the path to true enlightenment.

What Abundance Means To Me

I don't do visualizations or use the methods of The Secret, nor do I believe that they are necessary. However, I lead a very fulfilled and abundant life and I have everything that I need. I live exactly the life I have always wanted to live. I am surrounded by amazing people, I get to talk about consciousness (my favorite subject), and I get to travel to distant places assisting people in their awakening. I get to read beautiful letters from people who have epiphanies and hear stories about people who tell me their lives are healed because of the courses I offer in my school, some videos I have on YouTube, or from things I've written. I spend all my time doing what I love to do. This is happiness and abundance to me, this feeling of being in service to humanity's awakening.

My idea of abundance might be a little different than someone else's, though. Instead of give myself the huge paycheck that I could give myself, I leave it in the care of The University Of Metaphysical Sciences and Universal Church of Metaphysics so that it can keep recycling out into humanity. I feel that is where the money will do the most good, rather than sitting in my bank account.

The act of amassing money and assets is harming the economy rather than keeping it flowing. I don't have a lot of things. To me that isn't abundance, it is greed.

Is Amassed Wealth Really A Belief In Scarcity?

To amass wealth is a statement that you DON'T trust the universe to keep delivering what you want. How big does the financial safety net need to be before you feel safe from the day "when the universe dries up" and stops providing for you? By hoarding money, you are actually serving a belief in scarcity, not abundance. You should be willing to let the money flow back out into the world because you know it will keep coming back to you.

The techniques taught in The Secret great for a beginner on the spiritual path. After all, didn't we all get started on the spiritual path because "we want more of what we want?" The egotistic desire at the beginning of the spiritual path is different for everyone, but few started just because they wanted to be of service to humanity.

So it's a good beginning, this learning of the Jedi mind powers connected to the Law of Attraction, but that's all it is--a beginning.

Then What Will Bring Happiness And Fulfillment?

Those who are truly happy and fulfilled are those who have surrendered all egotistic desires, who don't care about amassing wealth or material things. An enlightened master is happy even if he or she doesn't have the bike, necklace, house, or a perfect mate. A message like The Secret teaches you to measure how masterful you are by how much you are able to "create more of what you want" instead of surrendering what it is you want to a higher force and letting the universe do with you what it will.

So what other alternative is there if you are not to purposefully manipulate your reality with your mind and emotions? I would suggest offering your life to the Divine and allowing it to be used in whatever way God sees fit. This is how I have come to the life I have always wanted.

This takes quite a leap of faith. To surrender your life to be used by a higher power is a radical invitation, but I promise that you will be happy. The things you like to do, the skills you have acquired, and the preferences you have are all taken into consideration by this Great Choreographer (which is really you). You will not be forced to be an accountant if numbers don't make you excited. Whatever your interest is, that is how you will be used.

You can learn how to use the Law of Attraction to your advantage, and there is nothing wrong with wanting a better life. It would be useful to learn how to stay in a positive state of mind, but take it no further than that. Don't let your happiness or your peace be affected by anything outside of you. Instead of serving human desires with the techniques of The Secret, serve a higher purpose -- something that you are already part of and made of -- and you will align yourself even more with the perfect life.

True Enlightenment

Let yourself be carried in the hand of God, and if you are meant to have the bike, necklace, the big house, the perfect mate, you will have these by default. So be abundant within yourself by being all that you are.

So what does an abundant life really look like to you? What is it that you really want? Do you serve the human self or the eternal self that sees all as illusion and knows better than to serve egotistic desires?

Go straight to realizing yourself as the source, and all will be delivered to you. It is a heck of a lot easier than all that visualizing, affirming, and strategizing! All you have to do is relax, be at ease, realize who you are, and do whatever shows up for you to do. Once you give yourself over to being used by the Divine, you will have lots of work to do in service to humanity. By default, you get everything you have always wanted.

Are you too busy for a friend?

One day a teacher asked her math students to list the names of the other students in the room on two sheets of paper, leaving a space between each name.

Then she told them to think of the nicest thing they could say about each classmate and write it down.

It took the remainder of the class period to finish their assignment, and as the students left the room, each one handed in their papers.

That Saturday, the teacher wrote down the name of each student on a separate sheet of paper, and listed what everyone else had said about that individual.

On Monday she gave each student his or her list.. Before long, the entire class was smiling. 'Really?' she heard whispered. 'I never knew that I meant anything to anyone!' and, 'I didn't know others liked me so much,' were most of the comments.

No one ever mentioned those papers in class again. She never knew if they discussed them after class or with their parents, but it didn't matter. The exercise had accomplished its purpose. The students were happy with themselves and one another. That group of students moved on.

Several years later, one of the students from that class was killed in Viet Nam and his teacher attended the funeral of that special student. She had never seen a serviceman in a military coffin before... He looked so handsome, so mature.

The church was packed with his friends. One by one those who loved him took a last walk by the coffin. The teacher was the last one to bless the coffin.

As she stood there, one of the soldiers who acted as pallbearer came up to her. 'Were you Mark's math teacher?' he asked. She nodded: 'yes.' Then he said: 'Mark talked about you a lot.'

After the funeral, most of Mark's former classmates went together to a reception / luncheon. Mark's mother and father were there, patiently waiting to speak with his teacher.

'We want to show you something,' his father said, taking a wallet out of his pocket 'They found this on Mark when he was killed. We thought you might recognize it.'

Opening the billfold, he carefully removed two worn pieces of notebook paper that had obviously been taped, folded and refolded many times. The teacher knew without looking that the papers were the ones on which she had listed all the good things each of Mark's classmates had said about him.

'Thank you so much for doing that,' Mark's mother said. 'As you can see, Mark treasured it.'

All of Mark's former classmates started to gather around. Charlie smiled rather sheepishly and said, 'I still have my list. It's in the top drawer of my desk at home.'

Chuck's wife said, 'Chuck asked me to put his in our wedding album.'

'I have mine too,' Marilyn said. 'It's in my diary.'

Then Vicki, another classmate, reached into her pocketbook, took out her wallet and showed her worn and frazzled list to the group. 'I carry this with me at all times,' Vicki said and without batting an eyelash, she continued: 'I think we all saved our lists.'

That's when the teacher finally sat down and cried. She cried for Mark and for all his friends who would never see him again.

The density of people in society is so thick that we forget that life will end one day. And we don't know when that one day will be.

So please, tell the people you love and care for, that they are special and important. Tell them, before it is too late.

Are You Living Your Purpose?

Though we are all one energy force, one mind, and One Spirit, each soul incarnated into a specific form on earth for a unique purpose. We are here to experience different situations and similar situations differently, and to share these experiences with the Universe, our total consciousness. There are many different journeys to share. This is why there is more than one soul experiencing this world.

Your journey is now and exists at this moment, whether you realize it or not. It will be more enjoyable if you consciously pursue your spiritual purpose to bring the world to Love. You do this by expressing Love in whatever you do, and most easily express it when doing what you do best. Consciously following your spiritual purpose brings you ultimate joy, balance, peace, freedom, and happiness.

You have seen them. He is the conductor exuding power and poise as his orchestra performs a beautiful medley. She is the lawyer who fights for her client's life as if it were her own child on trial. She is the waitress who serves customers with as much enthusiasm and caring as her personal friends. And he is the gas station attendant who still cleans your windshield even when his co-workers won't. Who are these people? They are spiritual beings who breathe life into their work. They are people who express themselves in what they do, and not simply for financial reward. They do it because they couldn't do their job any other way. They are living their soul's purpose and consciously doing what they do with Love, and they are happier than most.

Have you ever felt something missing in your life? If so, this could be the reason: The soul has a twofold purpose in each lifetime: (1) the universal purpose to rediscover itself as Love, and (2) an individual purpose to experience a specific role it can do better or differently than any other soul in a given lifetime. The latter enables the soul to help itself and other souls more easily rediscover Love. In other words, your individual purpose is the best way to promote the universal purpose.

There are no "ideal" jobs. Not every person should be a healer or a teacher. We need conductors, lawyers, waitresses, and gas station attendants. Each person lives his or her purpose by performing his or her job in a spiritually loving way, which reaps the many rewards of a purposeful and relatively stress-free life.

We are special

Each of us can do something totally unique. The challenge is to discover your spiritual "niche" on earth, so you can realize your potential for happiness. If you live untrue to this niche, your energy will be unaligned with the Universal Energy, and you are likely to feel something missing in your life. You'll experience a feeling of dissonance, which can lead to disease.

Let us suppose, for example, that in this life you can best serve the journey of Love by expressing yourself as a salesperson. But because of your free will, you did not choose that line of work. This can cause "disease" in the form of unhappiness or even physical illness. Disease is a sign you aren't following a connected life, body, mind, and spirit. Clients who discovered this and how it was best for them to work, achieved more gratification in their lives. Some actually healed their physical conditions just by making certain changes in how they perceived their work. By understanding and living their individual purpose, they filled the void created by a disconnection to the Divine and removed the feeling that something was "missing."

Application: Hit the lottery and know your purpose

One of the surest ways to know if you are living your purpose is to imagine winning the lottery and having all the money you'll ever need. If you'd choose to continue doing what you do, it is surely your purpose. The rewards of living your soul's purpose go far beyond money. If you think you'd retire, you may just be burned out. If you do hit the lottery, take a vacation and then do what you do with Love, instead of just going through the motions. You never need to retire from Love. You can always serve your purpose and enjoy what you are doing and how you are doing it for a lifetime.

When you are connected to your spiritual purpose, your life becomes easier and more satisfying and rewarding. Why? Because you are no longer operating as an isolated individual out of tune with the Universe. Instead, you are working with the Universe, consciously connected to the Universal Mind and utilizing the vast potential of the energy around you. When you find your true purpose, the Universe has no choice but to help you by providing information and energy.

* Always evaluate every aspect of a new career and ask a lot of questions. This is necessary to make sure you will be doing something that you will find purpose in. If you feel like the tasks you do each day are empty, you are going to feel empty.

* One of the best ways to really make your dreams come true in a career transition is to pump up your confidence and know you can make it happen on your own. This means entering a field you have always wanted to get into by starting your own business. If you are passionate about it, you will make it happen. Just don't quit your current job today and then wonder how you're going to pay the bills tomorrow.

* Take your time. Make sure you don't get in a hurry when making your transition because that is where mistakes are made. In a few months, you may find out that things weren't exactly what you hoped they would be.

If you're not really sure what your dreams are for your career, do some career testing. This is something you can do through your local workforce development office, or you can find tests online. These tests will tell you what sectors you are suitable for based on your current skills and things you like to do.

It is very important that you do a job you like so you can feel like you accomplished something at the end of the day. And the ideal career also keeps you from mixing your work with the rest of your life when you should be focusing on other things. In other words, you are able to achieve that work-life balance that is very important to your very existence and that of your family.

I've always been impressed with those who can take overwhelming things and handle them with ease and poise. It never seemed to work that way for me, until I discovered the secret for tackling those daunting tasks.

The secret is simple: make things simple!

With just about every major undertaking, things can be simplified into a handful of "core" components. That makes them manageable. Manageable fosters productivity simply because I can work on something that seems accomplishable. And when productivity goes up, desired results come.

I received the following question from one of my clients...

"If you have to pick, what would you say are the top 2 or 3 things we should concentrate on? I've heard the domain/site (blog) are the most important, then others say writing info products, others say lists. For short term and long term investment, what is the most important things to be working on?"

This client wants things simplified. And rightly so. He knows the secret to success is getting things down into manageable chunks.

So, what are these core practices for building an internet business? There are three things - and three things only - that you need to concentrate on with your business...

1. Offer Development.

You cannot make money online unless you have an OFFER. It's that simple. Unless there is some way for income to be generated, you can't get paid. End of discussion. Every business is founded upon a revenue-generating offer. Now, this can either be your own offer (small reports, ebooks, membership sites, coaching/consulting, advertising, etc.) or something you promote as an affiliate and earn revenue for referred sales.

2. List Marketing.

The fortune is in the list. You've heard it an untold number of times in the past, right? Building and profiting from opt-in lists should be a major priority on your schedule. You need to devote yourself to attracting new subscribers and then getting all of your subscribers to spend money with you ... by purchasing your OFFERS (see #1 above).

3. Traffic.

The third and final thing you need to concentrate on is "traffic". This includes both traffic GENERATION (getting visitors to a site) and traffic CONVERSION (getting that traffic to buy). This includes things like: starting an affiliate program, buying PPC ads, participating in joint ventures, utilizing viral marketing tools, raising your visitor value, tweaking your sales pages, etc.

With each of these categories, you have a variety of options to choose from in directing your attention. It would be foolish for me to say "grow your affiliate program" as your number one traffic activity since I don't know if you even have your own product to sell. That's why I don't recommend specific activities, but rather three key categories of business-building.

With each of these categories, find 2-3 activities to work on each week and you should see results in a short amount of time.

I recommend you work on offer development every Monday, listmarketing every Tuesday, and traffic generation every Wednesday. If you just spend a couple hours each of these days working on these core parts of your business, sales should come.

In a nutshell -

- Find an offer to promote.
- Setup a list to promote the offer.
- Drive traffic to the list opt-in page.

Keep it simple. Keep it successful.

A fable...

A young woman went to her mother and to tell her how things were so hard and that she did not know how she was going to make it and that she wanted to give up. She was tired of fighting and struggling. It seemed as soon as one problem was solved, a new, bigger one came along.

Her wise mother (and they are all very wise) took her daughter into the kitchen. She filled three pots with water and placed each on a stove top burner set to high. When the pots came to a boil, Mom started to add ingredients. In the first pot she placed carrots, in the second she put eggs, and in the last she placed ground coffee beans. She let them sit and boil; without saying a word.

In about twenty minutes Mom turned off the burners. She fished the carrots out and placed them in a bowl. She pulled the eggs out and placed them in a bowl. Then she ladled the coffee out and placed it in a bowl. Turning to her daughter,she asked, “Tell me what you see.”

“Carrots, eggs and coffee,” the daughter replied a little impatiently.

Her mother brought her closer and asked her to feel the carrots. She did and noted that they were soft. The mother then asked the daughter to take an egg and break it. After pulling off the shell, she could see the egg was hard boiled.

Finally, the mother asked the daughter to sip the coffee.

The daughter smiled as she tasted its rich aroma. The daughter then asked,“What does it mean, mother?”

Her mother explained that each of these objects had faced the same adversity: boiling water.

Each reacted differently. The carrot went in strong, hard, and unrelenting. However, after being subjected to the boiling water, it softened and became weak.

The egg had been fragile. Its thin outer shell had protected its liquid interior, but after sitting through the boiling water, its inside became hardened.

The ground coffee beans were unique, however. After they were in the boiling water, they had changed the water.

“Which are you?” Mom asked her daughter. “When adversity knocks on your door, how do you respond? Are you a carrot, an egg or a coffee bean?”

Ask yourself: Which am I? Am I the carrot that seems strong, but with pain and adversity do I wilt and become soft and lose my strength?

Am I the egg that starts with a malleable heart, but changes with the heat? Did I have a fluid spirit, but after a death, a breakup, a financial hardship or some other trial, have I become hardened and stiff? My shell may look the same, but on the inside am I bitter and tough with a stiff spirit and hardened heart?

Or am I like the coffee bean? The bean actually changes the hot water, the very circumstance that brings the pain. When the water gets hot, it releases the fragrance and flavour. If you are like the bean, when things are at their worst, you get better and change the situation around you. When the hour is the darkest and trials are their greatest do you elevate yourself to another level?

Lemon Squeezer

In Ottawa, a local bar was so sure its bartender was the strongest man
around that it offered a standing $1000 bet. The bartender would
squeeze a lemon until all the juice ran into a glass and hand the
lemon to a patron. Anyone who could squeeze one more drop of juice
out would win the money.

Many people had tried over time (lumberjacks, truck drivers, miners
etc.) but nobody could do it. Then one day this scrawny little man
came into the bar, wearing thick glasses and a polyester suit, and
said in a tiny squeaky voice, "I'd like to try the bet."

After the laughter had died down, the bartender said okay, grabbed a
lemon, and squeezed away. Then he handed the wrinkled remains of the
rind to the little man. But the crowd's laughter turned to total
silence as the man clenched his fist around the lemon and six drops
fell into the glass.

As the crowd cheered, the bartender paid the $1000.00 and asked the
little man, "What do you do for a living? Are you a lumberjack, a
weight-lifter, or what?"

In last month’s newsletter and training call I discussed how to present to your prospect without being too shy or too pushy. This month’s newsletter is all about communicating easily - which has to do with you being a sharp presenter, and presenting with professionalism.

Not winging it… but also not sounding rehearsed. No fumbling over your words. No being out of breath because you’re scared. No apologizing for being scared. Simply put, being a confident and professional presenter who delivers good content effectively.
Sound hard to do? It’s not.

Unfortunately too many people in the M.L.M industry don’t take the time to learn a few simple concepts. In presenting, right or wrong, your prospect will judge you, the business and the M.L.M industry based on how you present. Is it any wonder the industry has a public relations black eye? Too many presenters in M.L.M “wing it.”

Communication Quality number five is Communicate easily— no tension, strain, fakeness, sounding rehearsed, stuttering or hesitating. If there were a word that defined this Communication Quality it would be articulate. Which means: 1. to express oneself clearly and coherently; 2. to pronounce distinctly;

I’m not talking here about using perfect English. I can not claim to have mastered this Communication Quality from an English professor’s viewpoint. But I have mastered it enough to communicate to my audience. Sometimes things said with perfect grammatical correctness make no sense to the person you’re talking to. No, I’m talking about true communication – which is articulating words so they make complete sense to the person you’re talking to. If you’re speaking to a typical teenager in perfect English tongue – they will think you’re an idiot.

There are several things that cause you to speak easily and clearly. I will go into depth on these topics on the training call. I’m just mentioning and defining them here, because if I wrote everything about them it would be a 10 page newsletter! Here’s a list of things you need to be aware of that will cause your prospect to pay attention to you and truly learn from you.

Vary the speed of your speech
Your speed of delivery must vary – meaning you have parts of your presentation that are faster and other parts slower. Why? Because this is how you stress importance. I’ll go into details about this on the conference call.

Vary your voice tone and volume
A varied tone of voice and volume are very important if you want to keep your prospect’s attention and have them understand what you say. It’s what gives your prospect a clue about what is important and what is very important.

Create strategic pauses
Extremely effective so the audience feels that you are speaking right to them.

Use set-up words and sentences
Set-up words are words you say that prepare your prospect for what you’re about to emphasize. Like if I were to say, “If you learn nothing else out of tonight’s presentation…” that would be a set-up sentence to emphasize what I’m about to say.

Build bridges
Another topic is the use of what I call bridges. Bridges are words and or sentences you use to transition from one topic to another. When you’re shifting topics – you need to use a bridge – otherwise your prospect doesn’t follow you and there’s a gap. Many prospects get lost in this G A P between topic 1 and topic 2. It’s not that they don’t understand topic 1 or 2, it’s that they didn’t hear you move from topic 1 to topic 2 and they don’t see how the two topics relate.

Be easily heard
You need to communicate with a volume that each person you’re talking to can hear easily but not so loud that it causes the prospect to feel you’re shouting at them.

Make frequent eye contact
Make frequent eye contact with individual people. I used to practice this at my kitchen table with stuffed animals. I would talk to one animal sitting at the table and then to another one. If you’re talking to a husband and wife, you should talk directly to the wife for 5-10 seconds and then directly to the husband for 5-10 seconds. When speaking to 10,000 people, you look at ONE person and talk to them for 5-10 seconds then pick out another person. Never talk to a crowd.

When I complete talking about these sections on the training call I’m going to cover FEAR! Because if you are afraid you will not be speaking easily!

The Real Secret of Success
by Brian Tracy

More than 5,000 years ago, in the ancient mystery schools of Egypt, the mental and spiritual laws and principles of success were taught to students who dedicated their entire lives to learning in what was called the "Esoteric Arts."

One of these "secrets" was the Law of Attraction, which said that your mind is a magnet and that you invariably attract into your life people and circumstances in harmony with your dominant thoughts, especially your dominant thoughts emotionalized.

Today we say, "Like attracts like" and "Birds of a feather flock together." From ancient times, it was known that your mind sends out vibrations, like radio waves, that are picked up by the minds of other people who are tuned into the same rate of vibration.

The force that determines the sending power of your mental vibrations is the amount of emotion, positive or negative, that you put behind a thought. If there is something that you intensely desire, something that excites you and enthuses you, you will send out powerful, high-frequency vibrations that can travel large distances in split seconds and cause your phone to ring from someone you have not heard from for months or even years.

Because your mind is so powerful, especially when backed by emotionalized thoughts, you must handle it carefully, like a child handling a gun. The Law of Attraction is neutral. It works on both positive and negative thoughts. It brings into your life whatever you are thinking about on a regular basis with either fear or desire.

When the book, "The Secret" came out, along with the movie, I was happily surprised to see that the first half of the movie comes from my audio program and seminar, "The Psychology of Achievement" which was produced initially in 1981. We videotaped the live seminar which explains the Law of Attraction along with thirty-one other laws, plus how this law is applied in every area of life, and then distributed the video seminar world wide, including New Zealand, where the Author of The Secret comes from.

The weakness in The Secret is that it is "necessary but not sufficient." Of course, it is important that you think positive thoughts and that, by so doing, you will attract positive people and circumstances into your life. But it is not enough.

In response to The Secret, I decided to write a book which is called "Flight Plan -- The Real Secret of Success." In this book, I explain that life is very much like a long distance flight. When the plane takes off, it will be off course 99% of the time. But nonetheless, the plane will eventually arrive at its destination, even thought it was off course most of the time.

In my experience, the real secret of success consists of three major factors: First, you must be absolutely clear about your destination. By this I mean that must have clear, written, specific, measurable goals, committed to paper and organized into specific, step-by-step plans of action.

Before you can set your goals, you must know exactly who you are and what you want. You must do a thorough analysis of yourself, your life, your hopes, your dreams, your ambitions, and where you want to be sometime in the future. Then, you create a "Flight Plan" to get you from wherever you are today to wherever you want to be in the months and years ahead.

The second part of Flight Plan is that you must "take off!" You must have the courage to step out in faith with no guarantee of success. You must be prepared to launch in the face of your fears, doubts and natural reluctance to break out of your comfort zone. "To achieve something that you have never achieved before, you must be prepared to do something that you have never done before." (Les Brown).

Once you have launched toward your goal, like an airplane, you will meet with unexpected turbulence, headwinds, updrafts and downdrafts, lightning, storms and every sort of mechanical problem. You must be prepared to make continual "course corrections" as you move toward your goal.

Perhaps the most important quality for success is, and always has been, the quality of persistence. You must resolve in advance to persist in the face of any difficulty or problem that you experience. You must resolve in advance that you will never give up. You must resolve in advance that you will view every temporary setback or difficulty as merely a signal that you need to make a "course correction" as you move inevitably toward your goal.

This is a great time to be alive. The very best days of your life lie ahead of you. The highest income of your life is still to come. The greatest experiences of your life are still to be experienced.

There is very little that you can not accomplish if you will file your flight plan. Determine exactly what it is that you want to achieve, take off toward your goal with no guarantees of success, and then make continual course corrections until you finally succeed. If you resolve to do these things, nothing can stop you from creating an extraordinary life.

MLM Training: The Strongest Prospect Magnet is Great Promotion!

The worst thing you can ever do in your MLM business career is to think, ponder, worry or even get the idea that it’s unprofessional to promote! Here are some MLM training strategies for generating your own MLM leads, even if you’re on a tight budget.

Prospects are basically the foundation of any business as they are the - potential customers to the business. So just how do YOU find MLM prospects?

Let’s start out with a definition of the word promote which is the most important word in finding prospects for your MLM Business. The word promote means: to make known.

I was recently doing some MLM training with a person in my downline. She needed some help with her business, which was not growing. As I asked various questions I finally found the “nasty bug” that was stopping her network marketing business from moving forward. She didn’t want to come off as being or sounding sales-y. This stopped her from promoting.

How does everyone else promote?

A politician promotes how he/she can make a whole community’s life better - so he’s/she’s making herself known to the public by promoting and making known to as many people as possible what he/she can do for them. If you’ve noticed, politicians promote on TV, radio, signs stuck in the grass or on telephone poles along a busy street or maybe speaking at various group meetings.

A college promotes what courses it offers. It might promote on radio, might promote to high schools or through sporting events. A stockbroker promotes that he can help his/her prospect make money. A local restaurant will promote via radio, or mailing brochures or discount coupons.

The worst thing you can ever do in your MLM business career is to think, ponder, worry or even get the idea that it’s unprofessional to promote!

You really need to know and understand promotion. The only way you can have prospects, therefore customers or distributors - is to promote. The only way for you to make money in network marketing is to promote. You can write down your dreams and goals and study them every night. But you’re as effective as a billboard in the middle of the desert. No one knows you exist until you make yourself known. So if you ever find yourself where your business isn’t growing or you don’t have enough prospects, enough customers, or enough distributors - what do you do? Promote!

Why do you promote? The reason you promote is to create desire for your product. If you don’t create a desire for your product, it’s very difficult to achieve MLM success. How would you know that someone desires your product or business? Well certainly if you sent a post card and someone called the number - that’s someone showing desire in your MLM Business. Even if a person called and asks, “How much is this?” It would still be someone showing desire - or at least slight interest. If you called a friend and asked them to look at something and they said, “Send it to me.” That’s showing a desire. People sometimes refer to desire as “responses,” as in, someone responded to my promotion.

Different types of promotion

So now let’s talk about different types of promotion that create desire. You could promote your MLM Business in:

1. The Help Wanted, the Sales & Marketing or the Business Opportunity sections of a newspaper,
2. Advertising section of magazines,
3. Direct mail, such as sending out post cards to everyone in your zip code,
4. Door hangers,
5. Email, banner ads on the internet,
6. Networking. I’m sure you could have guessed that I would name that one. But you would be surprised at how many people, when mentioning all the ways to promote, miss that one. In fact, if you use traditional promotion with the mindset of just finding a network of people to work - you will fare far better than most who only measure their responses with how many people respond to their advertisement. You can turn one response from a promotion into thousands if you properly network.

One other place to find prospects for your business is to promote to MLM leads you purchase from a lead company. The advantage of this is you’re only paying for those who’ve responded and you’re not paying for all the people who didn’t respond. If I send out 10,000 post cards and get 20 responses, then I paid for 9,980 post cards that didn’t get a response.

The advantage of writing your own ads of course is being able to target your specific audience with your specific product or opportunity message. Which is VERY important and should not be underestimated. In contrast, when you buy leads, you’re buying general ads - perhaps people who’ve responded to wanting a home based business. The other down side to buying leads is that very often, lead companies resell their leads to more than just you - so you’ve got extra competition to deal with.

Three broad ways to promote

Now, it probably sounded like I just contradicted myself; I didn’t. I just saved you years of running in circles trying to figure the advantages and the disadvantages to generating your own leads or buying leads. This is the game. You must promote. There are three broad ways to promote.

1. Networking- which costs the least - you’re going to have costs of meals with prospects - costs of joining clubs and associations. So I have rock climbing club fees, I have mountain climbing association fees, horseback riding fees, mountain biking fees- these are like $50 - $100 dollars a year.

2. Buying leads is more expensive than networking, less expensive than generating your own - but has some advantages and disadvantages. Sometimes you get some hot leads - sometimes, you swear you’re calling a graveyard.
3. Generating your own. Most expensive, but has the advantages of targeting your prospects. Here’s a list of advertisements that I’ve run to promote my own MLM business opportunity.

Be “in” business

The bottom line is you must be using at least one of these three methods to achieve MLM success. If you’re not, you’re not in business - you’re out of business. What you should be doing, if you see the big picture and want the very big income is you need to be doing all three. All the time. Ideally you start out by networking, which will create enough money to buy MLM leads, then you’ll generate enough money from the leads you purchased to generate your own leads. My point is, as soon as you start making any money, reinvest it in promotion.

One other MLM training tip: don’t measure your success by just your immediate responses. Any marketer who is of any value knows that how you measure return on promotion investment is based on the “life of the customer.” NOT immediate return. Get one leader from a MONTH or 6-MONTHS of promotion and it can pay you for the rest of your life. People often ask me, how much money did you make your first year in network marketing - I tell them, “I don’t know, I’m still earning it.”

The Practice of Discipline

Discipline yourself to do what you know you need to do to be the very best in your field. Perhaps the best definition of self-discipline is this: "Self-discipline is the ability to make yourself do what you should do when you should do it, whether you feel like it or not."

It is easy to do something when you feel like it. It's when you don't feel like it and you force yourself to do it anyway that you move your life and career onto the fast track.

What decisions do you need to make today in order to start moving toward the top of your field? Whatever it is, either to get in or get out, make a decision today and then get started. This single act alone can change the whole direction of your life.

Seven Steps to Success
There is a powerful seven step formula that you can use to set and achieve your goals for the rest of your life. Every single successful person uses this formula or some variation of this formula to achieve vastly more than the average person. And so can you. Here it is:

Decide What You Want
Step number one, decide exactly what it is you want in each part of your life. Become a "meaningful specific" rather than a "wandering generality."

Write it Down
Second, write it down, clearly and in detail. Always think on paper. A goal that is not in writing is not a goal at all. It is merely a wish and it has no energy behind it.

Set A Deadline
Third, set a deadline for your goal. A deadline acts as a "forcing system" in your subconscious mind. It motivates you to do the things necessary to make your goal come true. If it is a big enough goal, set sub-deadlines as well. Don't leave this to chance.

Make A List
Fourth, make a list of everything that you can think of that you are going to have to do to achieve your goal. When you think of new tasks and activities, write them on your list until your list is complete.

Organize Your List
Fifth, organize your list into a plan. Decide what you will have to do first and what you will have to do second. Decide what is more important and what is less important. And then write out your plan on paper, the same way you would develop a blueprint to build your dream house.

Take Action
The sixth step is for you to take action on your plan. Do something. Do anything. But get busy. Get going.

Do Something Every Day
Do something every single day that moves you in the direction of your most important goal at the moment. Develop the discipline of doing something 365 days each year that is moving you forward. You will be absolutely astonished at how much you accomplish when you utilize this formula in your life every single day.

Action Exercises
Here are two things you can do to put these ideas into action immediately.

First, decide exactly what you want, write it down with a deadline, make a plan and take action -- on at least one goal -- today!

Second, determine the price you will have to pay to achieve this goal and then get busy paying that price-- whatever it is.

So here we are on Halloween... isn't it scary when things appear suddenly out of the dark? It can be just as unsettling when things that were once there disappear from our view. Like that prospect that had been so excited to meet with you and now cannot be found anywhere.

Over the past several months I've received many questions with a similar theme. Each of these questions leaves me a clue as to what's going on... what you're doing and what you're not doing.

The questions start off explaining that you're doing everything I taught you in Professional Inviter, specifically, you GREET correctly and the prospect talks with you in a friendly manner and then you move to the QUALIFY step and the prospect tells you what would make their life better. You INVITE them to look at a video and just like some of the live calls you heard me do they are eager to watch the video and you CLOSE THEM TO ACTION by getting the specific date and time to FOLLOW UP with them. Both of you happily hang up the phone and then POOF, the prospect vanishes.

What did you do wrong?

You start backtracking through everything in your mind trying to figure out what you missed and what you possibly could have done wrong. You felt such a great connection with the person - surely they wouldn't avoid your call. Surely they would at least have the decency to say they're not interested, if that's the case. But maybe they had an emergency come up and simply couldn't come to the phone. Maybe you got the time wrong - maybe you said 8 pm but thought 7 pm.

This is all NOISE in your head.

If you do not follow my FOLLOW UP procedures exactly, this noise in your head could destroy your confidence and walk you backwards right out of the business. I cover this in detail in Professional Inviter (www.ProfessionalInviter.com in the Follow Up section) along with letting you hear live calls. But here, I will outline the procedures and why they are so important.

DAY OF SCHEDULED CALL
On the day of the scheduled follow up call - call them exactly when you said you would.

If they do not answer the phone - leave an upbeat message something like this, "Hello Mark; this is Tim Sales. I'm calling you at the scheduled time. You can give me a call at 801.222.2222. Let me give that number to you again 801.222.2222. I'll also try to reach you as well because I'm going to be out and away from my phone for a while. I look forward to talking with you and finding out what you thought about the video. Bye bye."
You can call them one more time today provided it's not past 9pm. If you do call a second time, don't leave a message.

DAY 2
Call them one time. Leave a message, "Hello Mark - this is Tim Sales. I'm just trying to catch up with you. I'll try you later or you can call me back. 801.222.2222; again 801.222.2222."

OVER THE NEXT 7 DAYS - CALL 3 TIMES
Only leave a message on one of those calls.

OVER THE NEXT 7 DAYS - CALL 2 TIMES
Only leave a message on one of those calls.

OVER THE NEXT 7 DAYS - CALL 1 TIME
If cold market: Leave a final message, "Hello Mark; this is Tim Sales. I'm calling you to let you know that I won't be calling you again. I'm taking you not returning my call to mean that you're not interested - which is fine because I really just wanted to help you get ______. If you want to pick this up at another time I'd be happy to help you. I wish you well Mark, bye bye."

If warm market: Leave a final message, "Hello Mark; this is Tim Sales. I'm calling you to let you know that I won't be calling you again concerning the business. I'm taking you not returning my call to mean that you're not interested - which is fine because I really just wanted to help you get ______. Mark, I sure hope that me inviting you to look at ______ didn't in some way violate our friendship. If it did, please let me know because I definitely want to make that right. Your friendship to me means more than anything we could ever do business-wise. If you'd prefer to email me, my email is _______. Please do get in touch with me, bye bye."

Why you MUST do this...
You need to follow this exactly as I laid it out because it's what got the best results for me and people joining my downline. Sure, you could not call them again after their "disappearance" - but you'd be missing out on some that would have otherwise joined your business after a bit more objection handling.

Also, you need to leave a "final" message so that YOU can move on and your PROSPECT can move on.

You see, when you have something incomplete (such as two people who scheduled an appointment but didn't have the meeting) - you will keep bringing it up in your mind over and over again - this is damaging to you because it continually keeps you looking at that event "wondering." The prospect also has something incomplete in that they know they made a commitment they didn't keep. Now, they may justify their actions with "they'll take the hint" or some other such thoughts but the mere fact that they have that thought is enough to know that they too are incomplete.

By you leaving a final message which concludes the event for both of you - both of you can move on. I'd say 1/3 of the time that I've left a final message, I've gotten some kind of call back apologizing for them not calling me back. Many times they claim it was because they "got busy." It honestly doesn't matter what happened. You're doing this so you can fully move on.

So, earlier when I said that your questions leave me clues to what you're doing and what you're not doing - the questions surrounding you being upset about people going "poof" on you told me you're not doing sufficient follow-up and not leaving final messages.

Just try it - you'll see that you really will recover some of those who disappeared and you really will move on when you leave the final message.

Five Rules to Follow When Prospecting in Your Warm Market
by Tim Sales

With these five success factors, you’ll never feel like a pushy sales person and lose the friendship and respect of your family and friends. The MLM training in this article will teach you how to talk about your MLM business with ease and will always guide you to say the right thing.

Forget for a second that you’re in network marketing. What if you were starting any other kind of business like a retail store, a salon, or a construction company? Where would you get your customers? Your employees? How about business partners? Where would you find them?

In one or more of those categories a friend, acquaintance or family member might be the right fit, maybe not. Maybe they know the right fit. Somehow it always works itself back to an acquaintance, a recommendation or a referral. In MLM, this is called your “warm market.”

Life seems to be a series of experiences brought on by connections to other people. Your job as a Networker is to connect the bridges together and move past the disinterested in a professional and honest way, without “pushing.” Most all businesses begin this way.

Your warm market can be one of the greatest resources to your MLM business. Dealing with family and friends can be a blessing or a curse, but if you want your family and friends to continue to respect you, give you referrals, be your customer, and possibly say “yes” to your presentation, I recommend you follow these five simple MLM training tips when working with your warm market.

Rule #1 Hold your tongue. Don’t ever insult someone for his or her decision not to participate with you in your business. Don’t tell someone they’re stupid for not doing business with you, even if it is “the way you talk to your brother.” It’s unprofessional and out of place.

Rule #2 Be wise. “No” rarely means no. That same brother in three weeks or three years could lose his job. If you’ve made a fool out of yourself, not only will he not do the business, he will beat you to all of your friends and tell them about the “scam” you’re in. All of this because “you told him” how stupid he was. That’s not wise.

Rule #3 Deal with it. For 10 years I’ve dealt with objections, concerns, past failures, bad experiences, etc., which have all taught me how to successfully handle these issues. The good news is that all of these objections are resolved and discussed in the “Brilliant Compensation” presentation. Just as an experienced dentist knows that treating teeth is the easy part and the hard part is dealing with the patient’s baggage - like the time the other dentist stuck a six-foot needle in their gum when they were 14 years old. Dealing with these issues is what wins the patient. Once the trust is established you’ve got them for life or until you decide to stop servicing their needs.

Rule #4 Yes or No. Some prospects just take one conversation to be won and some prospects take 10 conversations. (Nine of those conversations resulted in a “No” answer even though “No” was never stated.) If you take the thought process as being that either the prospect says “Yes” or “No,” then you’ll miss the art of communication and networking.

Suppose your company has 20 products. If your prospect says “No”, find out what they are saying “No” to. Are they saying “No” to all 20 products? Are they saying ”No” to “I don’t want to diversify my income?” No to ”I don’t know anyone who needs or wants any of your 20 products?” That’s a lot to say “No” to. I recommend that you find out exactly what your prospects are truly saying “No” to.

Rule #5 Don’t be a bug. Do not ever “bug” family and friends about your company. Sometimes Networkers get extremely focused, which is good, and it should never be suppressed. Focus is what creates “eliteness.” Just be disciplined as to what and who deserves that focus. If it’s a friend or family member who clearly isn’t interested, quit wasting time there and go get in front of people who do want to be a part of your MLM business or a product consumer.

Your warm market is an important part of your business. Abuse it and pretty soon you’ll notice they don’t return your phone calls anymore. Keep these five rules in mind and get the proper MLM training to be effective at communicating with your warm market, and you will see that you can have a successful business and keep the respect of your family and friends.

MLM Training: What Leaders Do

Having trouble getting your downline to be motivated, productive and follow your MLM training guidance and suggestions? Here’s 29 proven actions successful MLM leaders do, written by a leader with a downline of 56,000 people.

A network marketing leader doesn’t wait until he/she gets a large group before becoming a leader. It can’t work that way, because you would never get the large group if you’re waiting to be leader first! Nor does the leader wait until they feel they possess the knowledge to lead - rarely they do.
At events, the leader arrives early and reserves chairs for their entire group on the front row. What I’ve found is that there are very rarely more than two leaders in any room. Please understand what I mean by this. Once a person gets to a certain level of success they will stop doing these simple leadership things because of ego. They suddenly become “too knowledgeable” to sit and listen to a speaker that has less time in the MLM business than them. If you remain humble and hungry the world is yours. So is the front row, by the way.
A true leader realizes that there is a difference between being a leader and being a leader of people. More on this later.
Network marketing “works” under many conditions, but when those relationships between you and your organization become tight and a “esprit de corps” is created, there’s nothing like it. I do mean nothing.
Appearance is impeccable. Even in jeans.
A leader “appears” organized, much like ducks cruising smoothly across the water, however, no one sees or knows how radical and out of control their feet are peddling.
Leaders of people treat their people with respect. Respect means you have a good opinion of their character or ideas. Simply put, you are interested in your people - their ideas, their complaints, their fears, their successes - THEM!
As a leader you develop or find five “Top Producers.” Devote yourself to them. Find three qualities that you like about each person. Write those in your day planner. Review them frequently, thinking of how you can help bolster one of those attributes. Bolstering an attribute can be many things - from a good verbal acknowledgement, to giving a telephone headset to someone as a gift who is working hard at making calls, to being their friend when they have a personal crisis.
New leaders are let down often by those they devote themselves to. Why? Because you selected the wrong person to devote yourself to. You only get good at character choosing with experience. Track record is really the only place to look first. What has the person been doing with their time… and what does the person do with his or her time? Albeit controversial, do not sink yourself if doing so won’t save your mate. Cut away when you feel you’re being pulled under. If you help “able” people, they will help more people. If you try to help an unable person they may sink you on their way down.
The network marketing leader organizes MLM training sessions and gets the product or service “specialist” in front of their group - whether it’s in person, on a conference call or on an audio or video. Example: Your company carries a nutrition line created by Dr. Whoever. He specializes in human nutrition and created an ingredient that is in your products that is truly unique. The leader will somehow get that doctor on a conference call with his or her group to raise their belief in the products.
A network marketing leader always gives “back” more. Example: Let’s say that there’s a foul-up in processing distributor agreements in your downline. You get the distributors on the phone with a customer service rep that handles the situation. You know that that customer service rep really worked hard to help the situation. Yes, it’s their job… BUT, the leader will send that customer service rep a bag of M&M’s or flowers or something to say “thank you for going above the call of duty.” What do you think that customer service rep will do for your group now? Just about anything.
The leader climbs the ladder and finds out who the decision makers are at the company and gets to know them but never bugs them. This is positioning yourself so that opportunity can see you. This is different than you seeing opportunity. Suddenly you find yourself speaking at the convention… hmm, I guess it was just luck. Yeah, right!
At the company conventions the leader will introduce the corporate staff to their organization and vice-versa. Even the order takers! Take the time to do this because it creates a sense of belonging for both the corporate staff as well as the distributors. Imagine the difference when a biochemist for a company has met 100 real people with dreams and passions about selling his/her product. Do you think that creates a stronger passion for the biochemist to create better products? Absolutely. All of this “belonging” and “passion” was created because of your leadership.
A leader in network marketing is the switchboard of information and communication. They’re not “in the loop.” They ARE the loop.
A leader can always be reached by fax, email and or phone. Returned communication will occur in less than 24 hours. If that’s not a possibility the message will indicate that it might be longer.
A leader never exposes weakness and fear to their organization. Some view me as being “inhuman” or robotic on this. What I mean by this is that the leader must always maintain their certainty about both the business opportunity and the MLM training system. I’ve never met a person in my life that doesn’t have fear and weaknesses. If you’ve got fears or doubts about your company get over them or get out. Fly to the company today and get your concerns handled. Come back and be a rock for your group. I guarantee they’ll follow you. Conversely, share with them your little uncertainties and they’ll be so relieved that you’re “human” and… they’ll also find another leader to follow.
Recognizing that everyone is growing, a leader never invalidates the efforts of anyone in his or her organization. One person brings six guests to a meeting, another brings two, and the third brings none. The leader is able to notice that person number three is there - which might have been a major growth step for them. So instead of criticizing them for not bringing a guest - they praise them for being there.
The leader is always searching for and praising something about his or her people. “Little babies love praise, but grown men will die for it.” Men in battle will risk their lives for a 1¼” x 1½” ribbon they pin onto their shirt above their left chest pocket. They wear this ribbon for the world to see. Forgo praise and you’ve missed out on the most powerful tool in your leadership arsenal. Praise for things they’ve yet to do, and you’ll create a person who withdraws from the group because you made them a fake.
If you share this list with your group - share whose content it is. If you don’t you will also be guilty of the last sentence of item #18. Seeking praise, respect, fame, etc. for what you didn’t do, makes you feel like a fake.
A leader uses and teaches new technologies in their organization - but only if it truly works. Don’t drive your organization down dead ends.
Leaders are ethical examples. If you “sneak” your people past the registration table you’ve just ruined their perception of you. They can never trust you and they shouldn’t. You’ve got one shot at doing this right.
A leader creates alliances with needed national and international (if applicable) groups to ensure their group has support and representation. If no group exists, build it.
Leaders are more concerned about the growth of their people than the growth of their bonus check. Focus on the growth of your people, your bonus check will take care of itself.
A leader never says what they can get others to say. Example: My company calls and says, “We’d like you to speak at the company convention.” I accept graciously, and then ask “Would it be possible for me to include a new leader named _________? They’re a good speaker and I would love to share the stage with them.” See, a leader wants his or her people to be leaders.
A leader never, ever speaks ill of anyone - even if they deserve it.
A leader acknowledges other leaders in the room. “We are honored to have in the room with us Mrs. 77. She conducts business meetings in the 44 area.”
A leader doesn’t get bent out of shape because they don’t get a return phone call from the corporate office - or the upline! More than once I’ve sent pizza to a department with special instructions to the delivery person telling them to say, “This pizza has already been paid for by Tim Sales. He asks only that after enjoying the pizza that you call him at 555-3797.” Everyone laughs and guess what? You get a phone call with the right tone in their voice for getting something done. Anyone can complain - they’re used to that. A leader finds amusement in creating more effective forms of communication.
A leader has a crystal clear vision about their networking marketing company and where they’re taking it. If the company doesn’t have something, they don’t complain, they figure out how to convince the company to get it.
A leader, after reviewing this list will print it out and does at least one item every day.

Have you ever been sitting in a restaurant talking with someone and the two of you are so engaged in conversation that it is as though you are the only two people in the restaurant? Better yet - the only two people on the Planet?

How about...

"We're just on the same wavelength" or "I feel like I've known you all my life" - these are phrases that are typically stated when people are trying to describe this magical connection.

Could all these have a common denominator? I believe so. It's that two (or more) people are talking with the same assertiveness level. The word assertive means the force a person uses to make their opinion known.

This is where art and finesse come into my otherwise systematic approach. So when you're presenting your product or your company, how forcefully you communicate to your prospect is what I'm referring to with "your assertiveness level."

In another way of looking at this, picture that you have infinite volume in your voice and you get to choose how loud you will tell your prospect about your company - this is your assertiveness level. If you scream you will probably be using too much assertiveness. If you whisper you will probably be using not enough assertiveness.

If I were to blame only one thing for the less than perfect reputation of multi-level marketing I would blame using too much assertiveness. This subject begs to be understood. I explained a small portion in "Professional Inviter" - but as a presenter you need more skills.

Some people can handle a lot of assertiveness being pushed their way and some cannot! What happens when someone cannot handle much assertiveness? They back away and withdraw from you. What happens when your assertiveness level is not enough for the prospect? They will be bored with you as you lack the conviction they require and they'll walk away from you. Therefore it is critical that your assertiveness level be approximately the same as your prospects'.

There are several methods or strategies to raise or lower your assertiveness towards another person. As I go through this list, keep in mind that I'm teaching you this from two different perspectives - one, I want you to see how you can raise or lower your assertiveness and the second reason I'm teaching this to you is for you to be able to tell what level of assertiveness your prospect is at.

Here are the main methods you can use to adjust your assertiveness level:

Voice volume:

If you speak very loudly, you can easily be too assertive. Speaking very softly, that is, not quite heard by your prospect - will result in you using too little assertiveness. Neither of these are optimum.

Body language:

Your body language includes how you stand or sit. The closer you stand to the prospect the more assertiveness you are using. The further away you stand from the prospect the less assertive you are. Shoulders squared to the prospect - more assertive, talk with your hands - more assertive, lean back when you talk - less assertive and even the color of your suit makes you more or less assertive!

Facial expression:

A strong face with head tilted up with no smile will have more assertiveness than a cowardly look with head tilted down. We all know how to look mean, angry, happy, sad or surprised - we all know these emotions we wear on our faces... well, each of these contributes to your assertiveness level.

Direct or dispersed words:

This has to do with the aggregate number of words you use to say something. If someone asks you a question and you reply, "NO", it's much more assertive than if you were to answer, "Well I see your point but I've not really seen that over the long term." Your answer is the same - no. But the assertiveness level is reduced or dispersed.

Timing:

There are many "time frames" you should be aware of when presenting. I will go into depth on this on the upcoming conference call. This one may explain why the prospect "was interested" and "now they're not" - what happened!?

Repetition:

Repetition is the number of times you repeat something or the frequency with which you repeat something in a given time frame.

Hopefully you can now see that there are several things that go into having or using the right amount of assertiveness. The Three Booby-Traps of Network Marketing
By Tim Sales

Let’s start out with defining the word booby-trap: a situation that catches one off guard; a pitfall; a hidden hazard.

The reason I chose “booby trap” is because the subjects I’m going to explain to you can in fact catch you off guard and be a hazard if you’re not knowledgeable about their existence.

There are three phases that one goes through as they advance (if they do) in network marketing - each can be a booby trap to the individual.

Introverting

The first phase is what I call Introverting. Introverting is defined as: To concentrate upon oneself or what one is doing. So how can we use this definition in network marketing? Normally introversion occurs in the very beginning of one’s career in network marketing. The indicators of someone introverting are when one is greatly concerned with what he or she LOOKS or SOUNDS like to others. When they’re studying or practicing scripts they’re so focused on the actual words that they don’t communicate the meaning or concept to the prospect. What they say sounds stupid - like they’re scared or uncomfortable. Their voice shakes and they sound very unsure of themselves - which communicates, “I don’t believe in what I’m doing” to the prospect. See, they’re not focused on the prospect - they’re focused on SAYING the right thing. Therefore the concept of what they’re saying doesn’t REACH the prospect.

So if you’re a new person and you are constantly thinking about what other people think about you, you must get past it. Here’s how to get past it:

Drill - which means repeat something over and over, what you’re going to say BEFORE you get in front of a live person.
Focus all your attention on the prospect and
Get into such a high activity that you don’t have time to focus on your fears.

When you confront what you fear enough times, you fear it no more. As you CONTINUE to do this, you will start focusing on DOING IT instead of worrying whether you CAN do it or not. Then something bizarre will happen. You’ll sponsor someone in the business. And on that day you’ll realize you really CAN do it.

Distributors who do not get out of introversion end up trapped by it and either quit or don’t succeed. They are also the ones who say, “The business just isn’t for me.” Or they will claim the WHOLE industry doesn’t work. Every time I see or hear this I think, ” Wow, should I send my bonus check back to the company EVERY MONTH because somebody says the industry doesn’t work?” Of course it works. But the first barrier you have to get past is what other people think of you.

Okay, so for this discussion, pretend that you actually get past yourself (introversion) and into activity. You start bringing people into the business and you feel wonderful. You get real confident and it almost seems effortless to bring people into the business. The people that are still in introversion are almost mesmerized by your abilities and want to know your “secret.” When they hear the secret they’re shocked that it’s the same old stuff. There is no secret. The primary difference is one is out-of-introversion and DOING IT and the other is still worried about what people might think and are “TRYING” to do it right.

Doing It All

The next trap I’ve called DOING IT ALL. The success of being able to sponsor people eventually becomes a booby trap as well - and it is very well concealed. The person has sponsored several people and has been praised so much by his or her peers for the ability to sponsor people that they identify themselves as “the person who can sponsor a lot of people.” Meaning their identity gets stuck to that one activity. I’ve seen people sponsor 30, 50, 100 people and just keep on doing it - waiting for someone to be as effective as they are. Occasionally one might sponsor someone who has gotten past introversion in another field, but normally not. The symptoms of DOING IT ALL are statements like,

“None of my people are doing anything!”
“How do I motivate my downline?”
“I keep sponsoring duds.”

If this is you - you’ve watched very valuable, very capable people fall through the cracks. You’re adding people as fast as they’re dropping off the other end. You are delusional to think you’re going to find someone who will get past introversion without your help! Stop it. You’re doing the industry a disservice because it generates a higher failure rate in the industry. You’re doing yourself a disservice because it can be very disheartening to sponsor all these people thinking you’re going to be making a ton of money on them only to see them quit within a month or two.

You must train the people you sponsor. If you’re unwilling to make a leader out of the person you’re sponsoring, don’t sponsor them! It takes great patience to train people. You have to sit through the pain of listening to them present. WARNING - don’t do this on an empty stomach. You want so badly to save them… you can’t - if you ever want to make a lot of money in network marketing. Doing it for them only handicaps them. You cannot do it for them - you must train, train, train, and when you think they will never get it, you train some more. They will get it when YOU get enough patience. By the way, don’t stop your training until you see that your distributors can properly train THEIR distributors. If you don’t do this step your organization will not move past the 3rd level. You won’t build a Christmas tree (better than saying pyramid), you’ll build a diamond. All your volume will be up in your first 2-3 levels.

Velvet Rut

The final trap is what I call the VELVET RUT. You’re making 3- 7 thousand dollars a month and the thought of going back to recruiting again is daunting. The reason I call it the velvet rut is because you’re making just enough money to keep you in the game - so it’s kind of comfortable, but because you’re not making the money you’ve dreamed of it’s still a rut, therefore a trap. Go back to work and sponsor 3 or 4 more and build them into leaders. GET YOUR DREAM.

You must have heard the expression: "It isn't what you know it's who you know." I want you to know that it is true.

Knowing the right people is critical to your success. Look for people that have what you want to have. You must focus on meeting them, hanging out with them and listening to them. After all, you want to get as much of them on you as possible.

Remember when you were told to avoid "those kids"? Why were you given that advice? Because we become like those we associate with in order to fit in with them. Give yourself the best advantage possible by choosing your friends wisely.

It was good advice in grade school... it is even better advice now.

One of the things it takes to make a great success of our lives is a plan for personal growth. After all, who we are today is the result of who we were and what we did yesterday. What we have is an exact reflection of our past efforts. If we expect things to change in the future, then we will have to change today.

If there are six frogs sitting on a log in a pond and one decides to jump off... how many frogs are left on the log?

Five?

Two?

One?

None?

The answer is six. The frog only decided to jump, she did not take any action on her decision. Wanting to change, deciding to change and making a change are three distinct and separate events. Only the third event results in change.

Developing a Growth Plan

Do you have a plan for personal growth? Are you doing anything intentionally and strategically to better yourself? Growth is not automatic. You have had some success, but that doesn't mean you've reached your highest potential. There is always room for increase.

There are unknown places to visit, oceans to cross and mountains to climb in your life. Many of us fall into "destination disease" where we think we have arrived at the summit just because we have reached a certain goal.

We accomplish something... we get a promotion we sought; we earn a degree at school; we marry our soul mate. Now we think all we have to do is kick back and coast on what we've already learned.

But, in order to advance in our lives we need to take the responsibility for our own growth. Me for mine and you for yours. Our attitude has to be, "How can I improve?" "What can I do to make myself better?"

We need to stir up our desire to learn. Our goal must be to grow and learn something new every day.

Maybe every day you should get up and go for a walk. Maybe I should take ten minutes each morning to speak my affirmations for my better life. Maybe we should listen to a CD that teaches us something as we commute to work. Maybe we should turn off the TV earlier in the evening and read a book for half an hour. Maybe we should hook up with a mentor twice a month and go for lunch.

It is your choice. It is my choice. I choose to grow. I choose to press "Play" on my CD player. You choose to read.

As we take responsibility for our personal growth we are honored for our efforts. We will get the right breaks and have the right opportunities. And we will rise higher and higher.

A New Way Of Seeing by Andrea Leake

I was a single parent, living in Toronto with one son, and working full time at The Canadian National Institute for the Blind as a Social Worker. I'd always had perfect vision until one day, while sitting at my desk, I was shocked when my central vision started to blur in my left eye. Over that day, my vision worsened, so much so that before the day was over, I had an appointment with the eye doctor.

The tests showed nothing seriously wrong, nevertheless within two days I could see only blackness through my left eye. It was December 15, 1990 as I looked into the mirror and said out loud, "What is happening to me?"

A friend suggested I get the tapes for You Can Heal Your Life by Louise Hay and listen to them for three months. With real skepticism, I bought the tapes and began listening to them each night. I started paying attention to the thoughts and words I chose. Prior to my vision loss, I remembered saying things like "I don't want to 'see' this anymore," and "I can't do this anymore."

I wondered, 'Have I created all of this?'

'Yes,' I realized. I was responsible for my vision loss!

Three months passed when I suddenly, with no prior art lessons, began to skillfully draw, first a blue heron, then an eagle, and other wild birds. Persuading Others

The key to success in a meeting is for you to be persuasive. It lets you affect the direction of the discussion and influence the final decisions and conclusions with your input.

To be persuasive in a meeting, the meeting participants must like you. To be liked, you must be likeable. People must willingly support you and approve of your ideas and your positions. The key to increasing your influence and persuading others to support and agree with you is simple: Make others feel important.

There are six things ("the six As") you can practice to make others feel more valuable in a meeting or any other social or business situation. They are essential if you want to speak to win.

1. Acceptance. One of the deepest human needs is to be unconditionally accepted by others. You express your acceptance of others by looking directly at them and smiling, both when they come in and when they say something or contribute to the meeting. This makes the individual feel valuable and important. It raised his or her self-esteem and improves his or her self-image. It also causes the person, at a subconscious level, to want to support you in the things you suggest or say.

2. Appreciation. Any time that you express appreciation to other people for anything that they have done or said, you raise their self-esteem and increase your likeability in their eyes. The easiest way to express appreciation is simply to say thank you for anything the person does or says that is helpful or constructive. You can thank people for arriving on time. You can thank people for contributing a piece of information. You can thank people for making a comment and for assisting or correcting you.

Whenever you thank someone for anything, you encourage that person to repeat the behavior and to make even more valuable contributions. When a person is thanked, he feels more valuable, respected, and important. The words thank you are powerful in building your likeability and ensuring that others cooperate with you and support your positions.

3. Admiration. Abraham Lincoln once said, "Everyone likes a compliment." When you compliment people on anything that they do or say, or on any of their possessions, they feel more valuable and important, and they like you more as a result.

Continually look for ways to compliment people. You can admire a person's briefcase, purse, or pen. You can admire an item of his clothing or appearance. If he presents a piece of information, you can compliment him on how excellent it looks or sounds. Even looking at a person, smiling, and nodding in complimentary way can cause him to feel more valuable and important and like you and support you when you propose something later.

4. Approval. You may have heard the saying "Babies cry for it and grown men die for it." People need approval from others, especially people whom they look up to and respect. Every time you give praise and approval of any kind to anyone for any reason, you raise that person's self-esteem, improve her self-image, and make her feel better about herself and about you.

The keys to giving approval are to make it both immediate and specific. When someone contributes something of value or presents a piece of helpful information to the group, immediately praise the information by saying something like, "this is very good work." Be specific, like "These figures are very impressive. They look great."

The more that you praise and approve the work and contributions of other people, the more and better contributions they will make, and the more they will like you and support your ideas and points of view later.

5. Attention. People always pay attention to people and things that they most value. As the saying goes, life is the study of attention. Whenever you pay close attention to another person, he or she feels more valuable and important. They key to paying attention is to listen closely when another person speaks and not to interrupt. Look at the person directly and hang on every word. Nod, smile, and agree as if what the other person is saying is extraordinarily important and insightful.

When others feel that they are being closely listened to, their self-esteem goes up. Their brains release endorphins, and they feel happier and more positive about themselves and their work. They associate you with this good feeling, and your influence over them goes up tremendously.

6. Agreement. The final A that you can practice in any meeting with any number of people is to be generally agreeable with others. You can be agreeable even if you disagree with someone's point of view.

When someone says something or makes a point that you don't agree with, instead of challenging him (which puts him on the defensive and makes him angry) say something like, " That is an interesting point. I had not thought of that before. It clashes a bit with my own idea, but I would like to understand it better."

If you must disagree, use what is called "Third-Party Disagreement." Instead of saying, "I disagree with you," you can say, "That is an interesting point. How would you answer the question that another person might ask if he or she were to challenge this point by saying such and such a thing?"

In other words, put your disagreement into the mouth of a nonexistent third party. Ask the person to defend his point of view to a person who is not present. This takes the pressure off of the individual and it enables him to defend his point of view without having to feel defensive or under attack by anyone in that particular meeting.

Habit: An acquired behavior pattern regularly followed until it has become almost involuntary.

The important words in this definition are acquired and almost involuntary. Let me ask you a question. When is the last time you sat down and said to yourself, "Today I am going to add a new habit to my life?" I would venture to guess that you have probably never said those words. As you read this article, you will see how easy it is to add positive habits to your life and the great power they have to change it. Think about the words almost involuntary. This means the habit is so powerful in your mind that it is almost unstoppable! With respect to bad habits like smoking, procrastination, and overeating, this is very bad. But with positive habits, this is very, very good.

What is a positive habit? A positive habit is simply a habit that produces positive benefits, actions and attitudes you want to acquire and make a part of your life. Why is there such great power in positive habits to effect change? Because habits, by their very nature, are automatic. After a period of time they can become permanent.

So how do we go about adding new positive habits to our life? It’s really quite easy. You simply begin repeating an action, attitude or thought process every day for at least 21 days. Research has shown that an action that is repeated for a minimum of 21 days is likely to become a permanent habit. Remember that positive habits have positive benefits and you will reap those benefits for as long as you maintain that habit. So now that we know what positive habits are, and how to acquire them, let’s look at some simple positive habits from the book that will help you reach your goals and have a healthier body.

Positive Habit #53 - Make it a habit to set goals

Since we are talking about goals, what better habit could you have then the habit of setting goals? Did you know that the most successful people all share the common positive habit of goal setting? A study was done to determine the importance of goal setting. College students who had gone on to achieve great success in business were asked to list their habits. The students who had made a habit of setting goals were in the top 3% of earnings in the population! It is almost impossible to overestimate the value of goal-setting as a positive habit. Goal setting is simple, yet 97% of the population never do it. By making goal setting a positive habit, you can start placing yourself in the top 3% of the population of successful people.

Here are some simple steps to help you start making goal setting a positive habit:

Step 1 - Define your goals, write them down, and be very specific; capture your goals on paper. It is amazing how many people never take the time to write down exactly what it is they want in life. Remember, you can’t hit a target if you don’t have one.

Step 2 - Determine what the time line is for reaching your goals; set specific deadlines for each goal.

Step 3 - Identify any obstacles that may stand in your way, list them, and state how you plan to overcome them.

Step 4 - Make a list of the people and/or organizations who will help you reach your goals.

Positive Habit #3 - Take Flax Every Day for a Healthy, Trim Body and Lower Cholesterol!

What is flax?

Flax is a blue-flowering plant known for its oil-rich seed. People have been eating flaxseed since ancient times, it has a pleasant, nutty flavor. The health benefits of flaxseed and flaxseed oil are significant and for that reason this habit is recommended as a primary habit for health and a trim and fit body. Here are some of the benefits of flaxseed and flaxseed oil:

Flaxseed contains both soluble and insoluble fiber. Several studies have shown that flaxseed can help to lower cholesterol in the same way that other soluble fiber foods like oat bran and fruit pectin do. A study at the University of Toronto showed that total cholesterol levels dropped 9% and LDL (the "bad" cholesterol) decreased 18% among a group of women who ate milled flaxseed cooked into bread every day for a period of 4 weeks.

Flaxseed is one of the richest sources of lignans and alpha-linolenic acid. Studies suggest that lignans may help to prevent certain cancers. Flaxseed is one of the few plants in the plant kingdom that provide a high ratio of alpha-linolenic acid (an omega-3 fatty acid) to linoleic (omega-6 fatty acids), it is an excellent source of healthy polyunsaturated fat.

A new study has confirmed that the positive habit of taking flax seed daily can help you get a trim and fit body. I interviewed Dr. Sam Bhathena, a researcher at the Phytonutrients Laboratory of the US department of Agriculture, he said, "we have observed that flax seed meal is much more effective in lowering cholesterol then soy. Several other studies have shown that in general, omega-3 fatty acids,lower lipid deposition, and help in reducing body weight."

Omega-3 fatty acids — More than half the fat contained in flaxseed is omega-3 fatty acid type, an essential fatty acid. There have been numerous studies reporting the health benefits of consuming omega-3 fats. Recent studies suggest that omega-3 fatty acids which are abundant in flax seed can help protect you from coronary artery disease, stroke, high blood pressure, autoimmune and inflammatory disorders. Studies on the effects of flax seed on breast cancer are now under way. Omega-3s can also help boost your metabolism, helping your body to burn calories faster.

Flax is available as raw seed, ground seed and also as an oil which is made by cold pressing flax seeds. You can purchase raw flax seed, ground flax seed and flax seed oil at most health food stores. The easiest way to incorporate flax seed into your diet is to buy ground flax seed meal and add it to your food.

· Substitute for cooking oil or shortening in baked goods.
· Add ground flax seed to pancakes, waffles and cereals.
· Put ground flax seed on salads.

If I had a dollar for every time I've heard that said, well, I'd already have a fortune! :-)

However "broken-recordish" it may sound, it is a truthful statement. The fortune REALLY IS in the list.

Fact is, if you possess the knowledge of how to grow and profit from opt-in lists, you can pretty much write your own ticket.

And, if you'll read the remainder of this article, I'll pass that knowledge right on to ya.

It comes down to getting folks to do four things...

1. REQUEST. First things first, you need to convince people to "opt-in" to your list. That is, get them to join your list of their own free will.

Usually, this involves giving away a mini-course, report or newsletter from your web site. All you need is..

An Attention Grabbing Title. (I could have chosen "4 Keys to Successful Email Promotions" for this article, but is that as attention-grabbing as "How to Pull in As Much Profit As Your Wallet Will Hold From Opt-In Lists"?)

A Handful of Bulleted Benefits. (A short list of 4-6 desirable things subscribers will learn if they join your list. Think "what's in it for me?")

An Opt-In Submission Form. (Your autoresponder system will provide this for you.)

NOTE: The BEST way to get folks to join is to embed the above mentioned items DIRECTLY in the most prominent place you have your site visitors' attention. Usually this is 3-5 paragraphs into your sales letter or 1/3 of the way into an ezine article.

2. RECEIVE. After visitors to your site have "requested" information by joining your list, it's critical that your emails be delivered successfully to their inbox. With all of the filters in place (among other hazards) this can be quite a chore.

One thing you'll want to do for certain is check your SPAM rating to make certain it's in an acceptable range. Again, most of the better autoresponder services offer this feature for you.

You can also do things like...

Get your subscribers to "approve" mailings from you.

Authenticate yourself as a legitimate mailer when you receive a "response challenge" from protection services such as Spam Arrest.

Use alternative formats of your email messages such as "downloadable email messages" in PDF format.

3. READ. When your emails successfully arrive at the inboxes of your subscribers, another task awaits - getting them to actually open your message and read it.

This is going to depend upon your "subject line". It is paramount that your subject line be intriguing enough to convince your readers to stop what they are doing and take a look inside.

One way to get this done is to create a swipe file of email subject lines that have convinced YOU to read the messages and then modify those subject lines for your own use.

Ex. I received an email that had the subject line of "This affiliate tip is almost too easy" that caught my attention and forced me to read the associated message.

This subject line could easily be used in a variety of different niches...

This dieting tip is almost too easy

This time management tip is almost too easy

This marriage saving tip is almost too easy

4. RESPOND. When you have convinced your subscribers to open your email message and read its contents, the only remaining "task" is to get them to respond.

You want them to take action. Click a link. Go somewhere. Ultimately, spend money with you.

The only way you'll be able to do this is follow a simple catch phrase I've been teaching for years: "useful, but incomplete".

It simply means this: your messages must provide content that is useful to your subscribers (otherwise, they'll unsubscribe faster than you can say "oops"!), but is also "incomplete" in that there is some additional offer that could enhance or maximize that content.

Ex. You might write an article that shares "7 Ways to Profit With Autoresponders" to send to your list. That's "useful" information to those who are interested in that particular topic. It's also "incomplete" because they need an autoresponder service to put the information into action. That's your cue to promote your recommended autoresponder service.

Do grades really matter?

The above magazine article may seem controversial, but really there is nothing new under the sun here. I have heard over and over that "A" students go on to teach "B" students to work for "C" student. It is another way of saying that those that know how work for those that know why.

The author, Sarah Scott, recounts the stories of the famous and not-so-famous people that have achieved success in life "in spite of" mediocre grades in high school.

To me, the article is a wake up to the parents that "demand" high grades and to the politicians that measure their education systems by test results. Johnny might not be able to memorize the table of elements, but his ability to adapt his conversation to the personality of the person he is speaking with will matter a lot more outside of the tiled halls of high school.

Wouldn't it be great if Sue were taught how to balance her bank account or create a family budget? How about teaching the benefits of business ownership?

Why not encourage Ahmed's creative talents? Instead we see art and music being removed from the curriculum. As Bob Young, co-founder of Red Hat, says in the article: "Typically, our [the "C" student's] success does not come from working within the system. It comes from reinventing the system."

As for the "A" students, look closely at the rules you are following and teaching... they may not really be in place for your best interests. The people making the most out of their lives can not tell you with certainty what their lives will be like in five years. If you can, it might well be time for a check up from the neck up. More is available and you have the potential for much,. much more than you have today.

You got access to the MP3 and PDF transcript of the call. The MP3 was nice because I didn't have to have my browser up on the site to hear the audio and the transcript is nice because you can read an hour call in about 10 minutes.

During the call James revealed how he used his free Instant Buzz traffic along with his own 3 step strategy to explode his downline into the thousands on autopilot. All while maintaining his full time job, in Michigan, as a PC support technician.

Before you give it away the PDF is customized with *your* affiliate links to several generic MLM training resources. You get a copy of the book with your own earning links, and does anyone that gets the book from the capture page created in your name. The book even has your name on the cover!

You give the new ebook away and you earn any commissions from those you refer if they upgrade in any of the programs. And since they're all related information sites, the conversion rates should be very good.

You advertise the lead capture page, via a special link you get, and Grandstaff's software will send an email to your prospects with a link to the customized PDF with your links. I didn't believe this at first, but it really works.

Just as the sales letter promised, everything is on auto-pilot!

Also, if you use pay-per-click or safe ads or a joint venture program to send prospects to the capture page... their name and email information goes to you. That is a nice change!

See, I told you the Elite upgrade membership was worth it. I'm good at this stuff, but if I have to buy a domain and hosting, design graphics, make a lead capture page, write (or even copy) a sales page, a download page and a thank you page and test them, upload them, test them. That work is worth about $300 to $500 minimum.

This is an exciting product because you can use it to build your own downline and you can recommend it to even your most non-technical downline members as a method for them to use. Duplication is where residual income comes from.

After using the system for a few days (yes, I bought it!), I realized that it would be a great tool to use for building any kind of online marketing list. The system will work for other online business models as well.

Why your degree isn't enough

Here you are on the journey to gaining unlimited wealth from your business idea or your business system. You have made your investment and committed yourself to success. Your Dream Board is complete and posted on your office wall. You have set your sights on an income of $150,000 per year and already picked out your new car.

You are working at your business, but nothing is happening. You work harder, still you do not get the results you were expecting.

Does this sound familiar to you? It sure did for me.

What made the difference? Learning. Self education. Hitting the books. "Damn!", you say, "I finished school when I was..." Yes you did. But not all education happens at school.

Let me ask you a question. When you finished school and got your first job... could you perform the work perfectly on the first day you started work? Probably not. You needed to *learn* whatever specialized knowledge was required to do that job.

Did things ever change at work? A new product? A new boss? A new procedure? And every time I'll bet you had to learn something new.

So now, here you are on your amazing entreprenurial adventure... and you don't expect you will have to gain any new knowledge? Slap yourself! Harder!! Remember, you want to get your information from people that have what you want. *Always* counsel with those that have achieved the success you are seeking. Anyone at your level or below just hasn't demonstrated that they know squat about what you need to know.

If you do not have an self education source that you are using to improve your knowledge about business, I recommend you check out the online Success University at this link. Visit the web site and sign up for a course or two. Kick the tires. While you are there, check out the business opportunity they offer. I am not going to hide anything from you, I am promoting the Success University because of the education system and you will have a chance to put some money in your pocket. If you just make enough to cover the cost of your courses, then you have benefited from a great business lesson!

Even if you do not participate in the Success University program, you need to get yourself a pipeline for new information. Discover the knowledge that you do not have.

Business Owner Mindset

This has been bugging me for a few days. It seems I want to complicate everything about business because I still think like an employee. I have been rereading Rich Dad, Poor Dad: What the Rich Teach Their Kids About Money--That the Poor and Middle Class Do Not! by Robert T. Kiyosaki and trying to straighten out my brain.

When you have a traditional education and upbringing (go to school, get a good job, retire) you are just not aware of all the possibilities for earning money and creating wealth. You only know how to trade your time for money, in a job or as a self-employed person. There is a hard-cap limit on how much you can make -- # of hours you can work times the rate you can charge.

It isn't my fault this is all I knew. I went to school. School is taught by people with jobs. They are not aware of what they don't know. The teachers do not have all the information. I've heard it said, "A students teach; B students work for the companies started by C students."

Everything I know about life, business and success has been taught to me by people with jobs.

Wow.

Kiyosaki says 95% of the population earns their living by trading time for money (employees or self-employed). That 95% teach only what they know.

As a 95 percenter, my perceived needs for safety and security overrode any desire to get more through taking risks. I was unaware of any other options. I did not appreciate that those that think govern those that labour. It did not occur to me that those who know how work for those that know why. I was happy and content with my job, never aware that I only had a job because the owner of the company did not want to do what I was doing.

I needed a checkup from the neck up.

I needed a business system that gave me leverage of my time and effort. My earnings had to be a percentage of the earnings of many others. It was the only way to break the time for money hard-cap limit. I had to help others succeed so I could succeed. The better teacher that I become, the more I will earn.

My new business needed my confidence in my abilities, but not my arrogance that I already knew everything worth knowing. I had to understand and believe that I didn't know what I didn't know. I have to be open to learning.

And failure. Don't get me started.

It is almost abusive the way failure is handled in school. "Don't make a mistake!" "Everyone passes so they are not stigmitized by failure." "Winning isn't everything, just playing is enough."

Give yourself a slap! I still have to beat these "words of wisdom" out of my head.

Failure is required! It is how we learn. Think about walking... the toddler pulls herself up on the edge of the table and lets go... wobbling she gains balance and puts one leg out.. and falls! Do we punish her? Do we tell her, "Never try to walk again, darling, I will carry you forever"? Of course not.

It isn't failure or success at something that is important. It is owning the skill you want to have. "I want to walk and I will keep trying until I do." So what if you fall 99 times, as long as you get up 100. Missing a goal is OK as long as you moved forward in attempting to reach it.

Sorry... I get excited about that subject.

Here is something that was really hard for me: "It isn't about what you know, it is about what you can share with someone else about what you know." I liked hearing that! I always thought I had to be an expert before showing someone else. The important thing is to teach and encourage. Move in the direction of improving my business knowledge, but don't wait to get started and take action. All the traffic lights between me and my destination don't have to be green before I head out of the driveway!

Have faith. "I always knew the ending." My eye needs to be on the prize, not the price.

Throw away that rear view mirror. I love this quote from Dan Tocchini:

"The biggest challenge to excellence is being good at something, because to move from good to great requires your willingness to re-think everything you’ve done that got you to be good. In fact, the very thing that got you where you are might be the very thing that stops you from going where you say you want to be."

Finally, know why. Don't be concerned with the how, focus on why. If I don't know where I'm going I am sure to get there. I have to imagine my life five years from today, after I decided what I wanted today for tomorrow ... and it happened! The movie The Secret says we have to Ask, Believe and Receive. I will attract what I think about the most.

Moving from being an Employee and Self-Employed person to a Business Owner requires change and isn't easy and it's worth it!

Kiyosaki's Cashflow Quadrant. This is the book that changed my life.

I had been recently downsized from a job I'd held for years and I was looking to set up either a consulting practice or purchase a franchise storefront business. Kiyosaki's Quadrant showed me that both choices were wrong... and so was having had a job all those years!

Man, if only he had written this (and I had read it) back when I was 18-25! Or even 13!! Being an employee won't get you to wealth, and the other options I was considering were no more than buying myself a job! Self-Employment is the same as Employment if you are continuing to trade time for money. It is the poorest way to make a living!

I needed a "B" Quadrant business. A business system that makes money even when I'm not there. In fact, by his definition, a business owner should be able to walk away for six months and return to a larger business.

Am I there? Not yet. But there is a date in the future - right there on my business plan - where I will not have to work on my business.

Energy flows where the attention goes, the results show.

Whatever thing has your attention, that thing has your energy. Think back to when you really wanted something. No, I mean really, really wanted something.

Look at what you are really doing, your energy has flowed there.

Every day you need to give attention to the right thing – don’t beat yourself up if you don’t succeed the first (or second, or tenth) time. Go out and make your dream more powerful. If you have a strong enough why for doing something you will make a way to get it done.

What is trapping you?

I placed some nuts in a vase with a narrow opening and handed the vase to a monkey. He sniffed around and reached into the vase to grab the treat. But he couldn't remove the nuts because his fist was now too wide to fit the slim opening.

Not only that, he refused to open his hand and drop the food. He was trapped. He could not reason beyond the fact that he had the food he wanted in his hand and that his only chance of freedom was to open his fist and let go.

Is your fist tightly wrapped around a small morsel of food in a vase? What are you refusing to drop in order to earn your freedom.

The life you want to change provides you with too much comfort. Even the small amount your employer pays you each month at your good job is enough to keep you trapped. The security of that monthly pay cheque prevents you from getting out of that vase.

Or is it your ego that is clenched in your fist? Maybe you cannot risk the chance of reducing your social status on your way to financial freedom.

There is some situation in your life that you hold onto so tightly that it is really gripping you. It holds on to you and you refuse to drop it. And it isn't even something you want!

Did you know there is good debt and bad debt? Can you tell the difference?

I'm not talking about getting a quick loan online or a few bucks payday advance from the guy in the black SUV... I mean there is debt that is bad for your financial health and debt that can help you create financial wealth!

Overcoming yourself

You know what you need to do to move yourself ahead towards success. But you find that your actions are not getting you towards your goal. You have met a roadblock.

How do you get around the blockage?

Having a coach or mentor can be the answer.

We can make our actions count and achieve focus on our daily tasks through accountability. Find someone to be accountable to, and set up a reporting strategy.

Sometimes we won't do what we know we need to do just because we know we need to do it. Involving a third party works because we will do things because of what others think about us.

Maybe your house is only "white glove clean" when company is coming. Maybe you only shave on work days. Maybe you only study when there is a test.

We care about people's perceptions of us. Use that self-knowledge as a tool to get you doing what needs to be done for your own success!

Can you afford your friends?

Not to be cruel or anything, but the people you hang out with might be preventing you from acheiving success.

It is a well-accepted fact that you can catch a cold from someone with a cold.

We are always careful to tell our children not to get involved with a "bad crowd".

But what about our friends? Here is an exercise for you. Take out a piece of paper and write down the names of your five closest friends. Next to their names, write down their annual incomes. Add those numbers up and divide by five. It is almost a certainty that your annual income will be within 10% of that average.

Why?

It is because a major part of how we see ourselves, our self-image, is defined by who we associate with. We tend to gravitate to people with similar personalities, values, income and opinions as those we hold ourselves. As a result, we attract the same financial assets they have, the same financial habits they have and the same financial results as they have.

We catch their cold!

I am not saying your friends wish you ill. In fact, their intentions towards you are good. They wish you well and that you have success.

Why don't we associate with people that have more success than us? Because it is a difficult thing to do. Finding a mentor is not easy. It is said, "Money is easy to get, health is a bit harder, but finding mentorship is almost impossible." But it is vital to your success.

Albert Einstein said, "The world that we have made is a result of the level of thinking we have thus far. It creates problems that we cannot solve at the same level of thinking at which we created them." What you are and what you have reflects what you have thought and what you have done. To change our level of thinking we need to seek out those that operate on that higher level.

You need to protect what you think about. Focus on what you need to move to the next level of thought. Seek out and meet people that have what you want. Read books written by people you aspire to be like.

Find a mentor or coach that will tell you stuff your friends won't. What you are told will be hard to accept, but the results will appear like magic.

Think of it as cold medication.

Multiple Streams of Income

My father had a job with one company for over 30 years. He retired with a decent pension.

I worked for one employer for 27 years. Then they replaced me with someone younger, cheaper and didn't get 5 years of vacation every year.

Most young people entering the workforce today can expect to have 11 or more different jobs. Will they ever get a chance to have 5 weeks vacation? Unlikely. Will they ever receive a decent pension? Unlikely. Can they expect to have to start over and over again at the bottom of their pay scale? Yes sir. Can they expect extended periods of unemployment due to "unplanned" job terminations? Yes ma'am.

How do we protect ourselves? We all have a desired lifestyle. To own the house and car and take the vacations we deserve, most of us borrow the money. Paying off these debts is no problem as long as we are working. But what happens when the work ends? Carrying that debt without ongoing income from a job can be nerve-wracking.

Putting money away for a "rainy day" is obviously the best advice you can get. But most of us do not think about digging the well until we are thirsty.

So, of course it is a good idea to save money for emergencies and "wage gaps". But I have a better suggestion... develop additional streams of income. Money that comes in even if you are not employed at a job.

Four Souces Of Income

Robert Kiyosaki, in his book Cashflow Quadrant, revealed to the world what the wealthy know. There are only four ways in this big, wide world of ours to make money. This is a book you need to read. Kiyosaki teaches what the education system doesn't. Once you know this stuff, you can't unlearn it and you can't pretend it isn't true!

Kiyosaki uses the diagram on the book cover to describe the only four ways to make money:

The vast majority of folks in the world are on the left side of the quadrant, they either work as Employees or Self-Employed people, the accepted figure is 95%. The other 5% earn their living on the right side of the quadrant. The people on the right side are the ones that know things about wealth that those on the left do not know. They hold about 95% of all wealth.

Here is how the quadrants break down:

Employee
Trades their time for money, either hourly or on salary
Works for a system
Not paid what they are worth
They are paid what the job is worth
There is an absolute earnings ceiling for every job
Lose your job – lose your income

Self-Employed
Trades time for money
The self-employed person becomes the system
Earnings are totally up to your own effort
Subject to up and down business cycles
There is still an earnings ceiling based on how much work you can do and how much you can charge
Don’t work – lose your income

Business Owner
Owns a system that generates income
The Business System allows them to make money even if they are not there
Only limited by the degree of leverage they can exert
Don't work – your income continues and might even grow

Invests in multiple Business Systems
Does not work for money; the money works for them
Earnings are passive and not dependant on personal effort

This quadrant is the goal of all people

Most of us are a smidgee short of being able to live off of our investments. What we need is a B-quadrant business that will generate income without us having to trade an hour for a dollar.

Kiyosaki is a strong proponent of real estate investment as a great B-quadrant business to get involved with. But not everyone is suited for becoming a landlord. In his other book The Business School For People Who Like Helping People, he describes the benefits of having a network marketing business as a recommended method of developing an alternative B-quadrant income stream.

Overcoming your fear of speaking

Did you know that the number one fear people have is public speaking? Even more than dying, folks are afraid to get up in front of a group and make a presentation. That means, at a funeral, most people would choose to be in the casket rather than deliver the eulogy.

What about you? Are you in the box or up at the lectern?

Speaking doesn't have to be a near-death experience. It is all about being yourself and really knowing what you are doing while you are talking.

We usually make a presentation because we want others to take some kind of action. So, who do you have to be in order to inspire someone to act?

Being Yourself

You need to present the real you to your audience. Break down your inhibitions about what is natural and proper. Don't be afraid to shed some of your societal protective layers and be "weird". You don't want ordinary, that is for everyone else, aim for beyond ordinary, extraordinary.

When you are speaking to a group you need to be aware of what they are saying to you. Listen to the non-verbal messages they are saying about your presentation. Be prepared to adapt to their needs, every audience is different and the best of the best speakers are aware and can compensate.

Remember, your audience is supporting you at the beginning of your talk. They have come to get something from your presentation and they possess a huge amount of empathy for you. After all, you are doing something they are scared to do. They admire you. If you lose your train of thought or suffer a technical problem, they are rooting for you!

Know what you are doing

Have you ever said, "I never prepare for a presentation, I perform much better when I wing it!"? You are wrong!

Any talk that is carefully structured, rehearsed, refined, practiced and practiced again, will be far far better than anything you deliver "off the cuff". Impromptu speaking has a place, but it usually isn't alone on stage in front of an audience eager to discover what you know.

Every speech has a four part structure...

Tell them what your going to tell them
Tell them
Tell them what you told them
Give them a call to action

People cannot remember hundreds, dozens, tens or even nine different things from a presentation. You can say a lot, but know what your focus points are. Three main points and a single call to action is a good rule of thumb. Reinforce the three main things you want them to remember.

Tell your audience what is in it for them and why they should care. Decisions are made based on emotion. Once the decision is made, we make up some "rational" and "factual" reasons for our decision. Engage your audience emotionally, then haul out the fact board.

Concentrate on benefits, not features. What's in it for them? I don't buy a drill because I need a drill, I buy a drill because I need to make a hole. What needs does your audience want fulfilled?

Be prepared!

Did I say that already?

Equipment will fail. Powerpoint files will become corrupt or be erased. Microphones will die. Cell phones will go off. Don't get caught unprepared. Know what you will do and never lose focus on the purpose of your presentation.

Leave your audience with a call to action. Something for them to do.

Have you ever heard someone make a case for a good cause and finish with "I hope you will think about giving us your support"?

This is not a call to action. Thinking is not doing. Your call to action should be for a specific result by a certain date. Our fundraiser should have asked, "Support our work by making a sustaining donation at our table in the lobby tonight. We accept cash, cheques and credit cards."

Your call to action should be the next logical step for your audience.

Be yourself, even if it means changing who you usually portray yourself, and be aware of your audience. Know what you are doing, be prepared and make a call to action.

Now go and give that eulogy!

Almost everything we know about business, life and success comes from people that have not achieved significant results in their own lives. Think about it. We devote hours every week to reading or listening to the opinion of newspaper or magazine writers, television personalities or pundits and radio talk show hosts. If we really want to change we need to find someone who has what we want, then listen to them and learn what they did.

The "media" exists to sell us toothpaste (or whatever). It is in their best interests for you to believe that whichever product is advertised with their content is the one product you need to be truly happy. And many times that product is available "right now, for a limited time, as part of this special promotion, at 10% off". Scarcity.

Over and over we hear there are limited quantities of "clean air", "fresh water", "this recommended stock", "good places to live", "perfect places to vacation", "jobs to hold", "the best education". Our fears of not having are exploited. Our brains are washed until we can't do anything with them. "It isn't safe to go outside" says the news report, so stay in and watch our latest movie of the week.

In fact, there is no limit to the wealth available in the world. We live in an abundant world with a scarcity mentality. Harvey S. Dent Jr., in his book The Next Great Bubble Boom: How to Profit from the Greatest Boom in History, 2005-2009, writes that there will be more millionaires created during this period then ever before. The biggest opportunity in the history of the world is right now.

One of the keys to success is recognizing there is abundance, and knowing yourself. You know that your inside world affects the outside world, you get what you expect. There is no limit to the success you can expect.

Knowing your purpose will attract success. No money flows to no purpose. Money flows to purpose. Know yourself to know your purpose.

Now, here is what I wanted to share in this posting...

You have a gift it is known as your Unique Ability (UA). This is a talent you have serves you best in life. Everyone else knows it about you, but you don't recognize it as something unique. Your UA is valuable because people will pay you for that gift that makes you special.

Not knowing what your unique ability is means you are unconsciously competent (UC) with that gift. You use it without conscious thought or effort. Uncovering your self knowledge of that gift will let you pursue paths in your life where you can leverage your UA to benefit your life.

There are also things you do now know. Facts, skills and knowledge that you could leverage if you only knew about it. These things form the areas in which you are Unconsciously Incompetent (UI). Not only don't you know how to apply the thing, you aren't even aware it exists.

This is where you need to be (or become) open to change. Your friends, mentor or coach can help you fix yourself and become conscious about things you don't know about. You will move to being Consciously Incompetent (CI). That is when you have a choice to make, either quit or change. Fish or cut bait. You are aware of what you don't know.

I think you know what the next stage is. Mastering the new thing (fact, skill or knowledge) makes you Consciously Competent (CC). Finding your unique ability makes you consciously competent about it. This is the goal you are aiming for.

There are three facets in applying your self knowledge to your actions. Your IQ, your EQ and your CQ.

Your IQ is well known to most people. Even if you do not know the exact measurement of your intelligence, you have heard the term used many times. Your lifetime IQ is usually fixed by the age of 14. It is vital for you to recognize that your IQ score does not control your destiny. There are many examples of people with average or below average IQ scores experiencing a life that is successful by whatever measurements you care to employ. By the same token, people with a high IQ score do not automatically succeed.

You EQ is your emotional intelligence. In times of high emotion you actually "lose" your intelligence!

Think of a time when you were in a heated discussion or argument with someone. Once the period of peak emotion passed, and your heart returned to a normal pace, your mind starts bombarding you with positions you should have taken, examples you should have used and ideas that would have crushed your opposition. If only those thoughts had been generated during the "fight". Unfortunately, as our emotions rose, our ability to access intelligent thoughts decreased.

The good news is that you can learn to control how your peak emotional states affect you.

How we deal with our strengths and weaknesses has a major impact on our success. We are often told "work on your weaknesses". We see far better results when we build stronger strengths. Identify your unique ability, and then work on improvements! Why depend on a strong weakness? Concentrate on your best ability, and find others that can provide strength in your weak areas.

Your CG, cognitive intelligence is how you think about things, how you approach a project.

Let's say you are starting out on a project to build your dream home. What do you do first? Where do you focus? This is defined by your cognitive intelligence.

Some would do research on other homes. Some would just purchase a house and plan to renovate. Others would prepare detailed designs. Some would concentrate on the decor inside the house. No approach is right or wrong, but each person decides on their own path.

All of the aspects of thought discussed above are at a level beneath the subconscious mind. We are not aware of the processes taking place. Our subconscious only lets through the thoughts that we are focused on. "The inner world (of thoughts and reactions) and the outer world (of circumstances and situations) are connected to each other."

Once you know yourself and how you fit into the world, you have a cornerstone for your success. Next you can work on how others fit in.

Six Laws of the Human Mind

I have learnt that our lack of success is generally not due to our having a skills problem. Most of us can learn the skills needed to perform a task. What we have is a mind set problem. Our minds wander, drift and lose focus on what is important.

In beginning to understand yourself, it is vital that you master an understanding of the six laws that govern the human mind. These are how they were explained to me...

Law #1. Thoughts are real forces.

And actions are required to give effect to those forces. Thinking is not enough, your thoughts must stir you to action. Use the techniques of Self-Talk (Shad Helmstetter: What To Say When You Talk To Yourself) to retrain and manage your subconscious mind. Prepare a list of affirmations that you repeat to yourself every day. By putting your affirmations into your subconscious, and casting them into the universe, your thoughts will manifest in reality.

Sample affirmations:

I'm happy, healthy, wealthy and wise
I'm a money magnet

Self-Talk is a powerful technique for changing your habits and creating power in your mind. I will write a more detailed article about Self-Talk in the near future.

Law #2. The mind is a sending and receiving station for thoughts.

You attract what your thoughts are about. Consider the superstitions, sayings, generalizations and trite observations you make every day.

Friday the 13th is unlucky
I have a bad memory
I'm never on time
No one can do that
Everybody thinks that is a bad idea

Whenever you give voice to these ideas, your subconscious mind listens to you and believes it. It tells your conscious mind, "Hey, you can't remember names"... and you don't even try. You've attracted the condition of having a bad memory by convincing yourself it is true.

You could just have easily told yourself (over time) that you have an excellent memory and you never forget a name. And that too would be true.

Here's an exercise. When you catch yourself or someone else giving a voice to the negative or making a generalization, tell yourself or them "If you say so!" Because Mondays are only bad if you say they are. Black cats are only unlucky if you say they are. You hate your job or career because you say you do.

Replace those statements that are not serving you with positive affirmations:

Today is another great day
I love getting a good start to the week on Monday morning

Law #3. The Law of Attraction: Thoughts that are emotionalized become magnetized and attract similar and like thoughts.

You succeed at tasks because you are emotionalized to exert the effort required to complete them. You want to choose positive thoughts. Create and use affirmations that stir emotions within yourself. These emotions must be powerful enough to force you to stay the course when your complicated life tries to interfere with your focus.

Think of a magnifying glass setting fire to a leaf. In order to succeed there has to be sunlight (a force) and the glass must be held in focus and be unwavering.

For success, make yourself a focused, steady magnifying glass instead of a wandering generality.

Law #4. The Law of Control: We are forever experiencing thoughts. We have the ability to entertain or dismiss the thought.

Thoughts are constantly racing through your mind at about 1,500 words a minute. We are always thinking about everything.

As you read these words many different thoughts are appearing in your head. I'm thirsty. What time is it? What's for dinner? I can't remember names. What was that about black cats?

You can increase your focus by not entertaining thoughts that distract you from your task. Stop the voices if they are not serving your purpose. As Bill Shakespeare had Lady Macbeth say in the Scottish play, in a totally different context, "Out damn spot!"

Law #5. The Law of Insertion: We have the power and ability to insert a specific thought into our mind at any time.

Isn't that powerful? If our inner voice says "It's another gloomy Monday", Law #4 says we can dismiss that thought from our mind and Law #5 says we can replace it with another thought, such as "I love getting a good start to the week on Monday morning!"

If you say so!

Law #6. The Law of Connection: The inner world (of thoughts and reactions) and the outer world (of circumstances and situations) are connected to each other.

Did you have a good day or a bad day? Either way, it is all made up. Whichever one you proclaim, your subconscious will by affected by your choice and you will notice either good or bad things.

You hear an ambulance (situation) and you make up a story in your mind (thought). "There must have been a big accident." "Someone must be very sick or injured." In your mind you are concerned or worried (reaction). "A woman is having a baby." In your mind you are pleased and hopeful for new life (reaction). The stories are all made up, and they are real to our minds.

The quality of your life is directly proportional to the thoughts you allow. If your thoughts are good your life will be good. You can make up anything and turn any situation or event to good or bad.

Neat stuff, eh? Your own belief will generate the power you need to succeed. What an awesome thing to know. What an incredible tool to have in your belt when you are facing life.

You can be arrogant about how your life will be:

I am lucky
Everything I touch turns to gold
I am a success
It is prosperous to be in business with me
I am...

A final affirmation for you to use:

"My personal vibration determines the situations and circumstances that happen to me, my thoughts and beliefs determine my personal vibration."

This article appeared May 15 2006 in the Los Angeles Times and on the Chicago Tribune web site. The answer for many employees is to create multiple streams of income for themselves. Many believe in the advice they were given when they were young, "Get a good education, get a good job and work hard so you can enjoy your retirement."

It just isn't true!

Many Forced to Retire Early
Despite the increasing financial pressure to stay employed, nearly half of U.S. workers leave before they plan to, a survey indicates.

American workers, who face growing financial pressure to stay in the workforce, are far more likely to be forced into an early retirement than many expect, according to a study being released today.

Four out of 10 retired workers left their jobs sooner than they had planned, usually because of health problems or the loss of employment, according to the report by McKinsey & Co., which was based on a national survey of 3,086 people.

The survey also found that 45% of people who are currently employed planned to keep working past age 65. But among the retirees polled, only 13% said they had done so.

The findings raise fresh concerns about Americans' ability to afford a comfortable retirement. With more companies abandoning or freezing their pensions, many people say they plan to work longer to build up their nest eggs.

The reality "is quite sobering," said David Hunt, a senior partner at McKinsey. "Our research clearly shows that many people — and more than a few public policymakers — who are betting on simply working longer to compensate for a lack of current savings are setting themselves up for a rude awakening and a significantly poorer standard of living in retirement than they had expected."

Marsh estimates that his pension is less than half what it would have been had he remained longer in the job. To boost his income, he signed up for Social Security earlier than planned, further scaling down his retirement pay. Eventually, he and his wife took in an elderly boarder for whom his wife cares to make ends meet. "It's been difficult," he said.

... workers face the need to maintain their careers to set aside money for retirement. "I think we're seeing the realization on the part of people that they ought to extend their work life longer than in the past," she said.

It is a realization brought on by the changing landscape for retirement security. Many employers no longer provide traditional pensions with guaranteed monthly payments. Instead, they offer 401(k) savings plans, and it's up to the workers to salt away enough money to last them in old age.

You can't stop growing yourself. Personal and Professional development are not options.

A recent study estimated that in 2002, there was 800MB of recorded information created for every person on the planet. That would be about a 30 foot (10 meter) shelf of books for each of us. Did you read your 30 feet of books that year? I don't have any more recent statistics, but I know the number for 2006 will be larger. 2002 was estimated to be 30% larger than 1999.

Are you enrolled in a learning program? You will be if you want to succeed.

Know yourself

A basic principle of success is self-knowledge. Your mind creates your reality.

Have you ever said, "I don't like Mondays!"? I say, that is something you have made up. Mondays do not have a particular personality, at least they don't until you make one up for them. I say, any day that ends in a "y" is a good one. And guess what, they are!

If we expect something, our minds make it true. When we say "I'm having a bad day", then every bad thing that happens is noted and remembered. Then we can think back and recall perfectly all the horrible things that happened to us. Blessings are forgotten or dismissed and we have a sour taste in our mouth, and our head.

What we carry in our minds defines our lives, and our future.

You become what you think about every day

When I first heard this, I thought "Exactly!" If every day we think of ourselves as people that are worth $X thousands per year, buried in debt and helpless to ever change our situation... then that is what we become. We believe what we tell ourselves and create that reality in our lives.

So now what? Can we change? Of course we can! Becoming aware of this principle gives us the power to do something about it. But we can't change overnight. We need to know that we can change and the direction we need to go.

If we leave Winnipeg for Vancouver, but wake up one morning in Montreal... are we forever lost and doomed to failure? Not at all! We recognize our failure, pick ourselves up off the road and point our car west. Every kilometer in the right direction is a positive one.

In order to learn to think correctly, we need to get a number of things sorted out. Let's start with something that will have an immediate, positive impact on our outlook on life and they way we interact with others.

Focus on the good

A Yiddish folk tale:

An old man sat outside the walls of a great city.

When travelers approached, they would ask the old man,

"What kind of people live in this city?"

And the old man would answer,

"What kind of people live in the place where you came from?"

If the travelers answered,

"Only bad people live in the place where we came from,"

the old man would reply,

"Continue on; you will find only bad people here."

But if the travelers answered,

"Good people live in the place where we came from,"

then the old man would say,

"Enter, for here, too, you will find only good people."

You see, you find what you want to find. Your brain contains a Reticular Activating System (RAS) that processes sensory data and determines which information is worthy of notice.

Ronald Bailey described it as “[The reticular formation] alerts the brain to incoming information from the senses, and from the centers of thought, memory and feeling. More than that, it adjudicates the relative importance of that information. . . In a way the RAS is like a vigilant secretary, sorting out the trivia from the incoming messages.”

You may have noticed that when you are considering making a major purchase (a new house or a car), you start to notice a lot of references to houses or cars. You see more ads for the item you are seeking, you hear people discussing them, newspapers, magazines and television shows are focusing on the item you are interested in. That is your RAS making your mind aware of environmental information relating to something you consider important.

When you finally decide to buy that yellow SmartCar, all you see on the road are yellow SmartCars. It isn't that they weren't there before, your mind just didn't think it was important enough to tell you!

So focus on the good, lock out negative thoughts. Your RAS will reward you by supressing the effect of negative things and bringing positive messages to your mind.

"Hi, how are you?" "I'm excellent!"

Tell someone how much you value them as a friend, employee, co-worker.

Finally, here's the dirty little secret about focusing on the good... even if you don't believe it will make a difference, it will.

If you are reading this and your mind is full of "what load of pig feathers!" and "what shade or rose-coloured glasses is this guy wearing?" I dare you to prove me wrong. But you need to be honest with yourself.

For 21 straight days you need to always tell people you are excellent... even if you really feel like the last coffee grounds at the bottom of your mug. Focus on the good, eliminate the negative. Let me know if people treat you differently. Let me know if you find yourself having to try less hard to supress those negative thoughts. Let me know if you feel better.

My story... after I had been making a conscious effort to focus on the good for about 60 days, I met up with a woman I used to work with. We were both participating in a project for our children's school. After our working together for an hour or so, she turned to me and said, "Aren't you relentlessly positive!" To which I replied, "Yes, I am, thank you."
